Follow'ups were conducted on 130 mastectomized patients, periodically subjected to bone scintigraphy in addition to conventional tests. 89 of the patients had received chemotherapy and 41 had not. The results obtained show the value of scintigraphy for both accurate staging and follow-up in such patients.

DIEP Flap Weights in Immediate 1-stage and 2-stage Breast Reconstruction: Considering Chest Wall Deformity.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

December 2024

From the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Nippon Medical School Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.

Background: There are advantages and disadvantages to both immediate 1-stage and 2-stage autologous-breast reconstruction. The 2-stage procedure may suffer from a hitherto overlooked difficulty: the tissue expander may induce chest wall depression that may require using a heavier-than-expected flap to generate symmetrical breasts. We conducted a retrospective observational study to assess this phenomenon.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer treatments can cause harmful effects on blood circulation, but laser therapy might help restore balance in patients.
  • This study compared two groups of mastectomized patients taking hormonal blockers: one group received intravascular laser therapy while the other received a placebo, and biomarkers were measured over four months.
  • Results showed a significant reduction in homocysteine levels in the laser-treated group, suggesting this therapy could benefit cardiovascular health in patients receiving cancer treatment.

Radiotherapy is important in breast cancer treatment. A side effect of the treatment is fibrosis that decreases the possibility for a successful breast reconstruction with expanders and with high patient satisfaction with the result. The most common option for mastectomized, irradiated women wishing for a breast reconstruction is autologous tissue transplantation.

Photobiomodulation for Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Reduction in Mastectomized Women on Hormone Blockers: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Photobiomodul Photomed Laser Surg

April 2024

Department of General and Specialized Nursing, Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil.

To assess the impact of intravascular laser irradiation of blood (ILIB) on the primitive carotid artery (PCA) hemodynamic variables, specifically blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR), in mastectomized patients undergoing hormone blocker treatments. This study is a controlled, experimental, and randomized clinical trial. Patients were allocated into two groups: the experimental group (G1)-patients who received ILIB therapy using a 660 nm laser targeted at the PCA, and the control group (G2)-patients who did not receive ILIB therapy.

Objective: In left breast radiotherapy (RT) desired heart doses may be achieved without heart-sparing RT techniques in some patients. We aimed to examine the existence of predictive factors and cutoff points to determine which patients are the main candidates for heart-sparing RT techniques.

Material And Method: Dosimetric data for left breast cancer was examined.
