The (PSS) experiment was part of the European Space Agency's mission and was conducted on the International Space Station from 2014 to 2016. The PSS experiment investigated the properties of montmorillonite clay as a protective shield against degradation of organic compounds that were exposed to elevated levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in space. Additionally, we examined the potential for montmorillonite to catalyze UV-induced breakdown of the amino acid alanine and its potential to trap the resulting photochemical byproducts within its interlayers.

Background/objectives: UV radiation is a primary cause of skin damage and photoaging. β-carotene, a potent antioxidant, aids in mitigating UV-induced oxidative stress and enhancing skin photoprotection. This research aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a nutraceutical product designed to prevent photoaging.

Solar radiation is the main source of human exposure to UV rays, which is the major carcinogen in skin cancers by inducing DNA damage. Skin cells repair these damages by activating the DNA damage response (DDR) to safeguard genome integrity, thereby preventing skin cancers. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor beta (PPARβ), a druggable transcription factor, is involved in the development of UV-dependent skin cancers, although its role is not mechanistically elucidated.

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which leads to the formation of mutagenic and cytotoxic DNA lesions such as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and 6-4 photoproducts (6-4 PPs), can be potentially fatal. The way UVA forms DNA lesions and alters DNA topology and mechanics is still unclear, unlike the cases of UVC and UVB. Herein, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and AFM-based Force Spectroscopy (AFS) have been employed to investigate the topological and mechanical properties of single DNA molecules, bare or E.

Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are a unique class of UV-screening bioactive molecules with potent antioxidants and photoprotective properties, synthesized by various species of cyanobacteria in different habitats. The cyanobacterial biofilms play a crucial driver in the development of ecological communities. The current study examined the existence of the photoprotective MAAs in a novel epilithic cyanobacterium Lyngbya sp.
