In this study, we analyzed the transcriptomes of RNA and DNA viruses from the oligotrophic water of Lake Baikal and the effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharged into the lake from the towns of Severobaikalsk and Slyudyanka located on the lake shores. Given the uniqueness and importance of Lake Baikal, the issues of biodiversity conservation and the monitoring of potential virological hazards to hydrobionts and humans are important. Wastewater treatment plants discharge treated effluent directly into the lake.

The coastal area of the southern Lake Baikal with the population over 35,000 people remains an attractive spot for both tourists and local residents. Despite high anthropogenic impact, a detailed assessment of water quality in this area has not been performed so far. Here, we performed a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of the surface, bottom and interstitial water in rivers, lacustrine water and wastewater in the southern Lake Baikal region.

This section of the study in sanitary bacteriology is becoming ever more topical and is an important task of modern hygienic science. One of complicacies of the study of the problem is related with the fact that the presence of only experimental data fails to be sufficient, as the impact of any given chemical substance on different bacteria in the experiment does not mean that under natural conditions, similar results will be obtained.

Their halotolerance was studied by means of inoculation of daily pure cultures of meat--peptone broth with 3, 7 and 10% of sodium chloride and incubation at 37°C. At that all studied microflora was found to have significant indices of halotolerance with a predominance of aquatic isolates.

UV-radiators were high-intensity xenon flashbulbs, as well as standard mercury and amalgam lamps; subjects were reference strains and test-microorganisms isolated from the ISS environment. Quantities of viable airborne and superficial microorganisms were determined before and after UV irradiation.
