Despite the widespread use of currently available serum phosphate management options, elevated serum phosphate is common in patients with end-stage kidney disease on dialysis. Characteristics of currently available phosphate binders that lead to poor patient experiences such as large drug volume size of required daily medication (e.g.

Background: Acute heart failure is a common clinical syndrome leading to hospital admission, with few evidence-based therapies for managing congestion. This trial aims to assess the efficacy of acetazolamide combined with loop diuretics in achieving decongestion among patients who fail to respond to oral diuretics and progress to acute decompensated heart failure in the absence of injectable furosemide.

Methods: This single-center, double-blind randomized controlled trial with a 1:1 allocation ratio aims to evaluate 130 patients admitted to the infusion ward.

Chronic hyperglycemia results in morphological and functional alterations of the kidney and microvascular damage, leading to diabetic nephropathy (DN). Since DN progresses to irreversible renal damage, it is important to elucidate a pharmacological strategy aimed for treating DN in the early stage. Here, we used the type 2 diabetic rat model to induce DN and show a nephroprotective effect following the stimulation of PPAR-α, which stabilized renal tight junction components claudin-2, claudin-5, and claudin-16.

Polymyxin-B induced Bartter-like syndrome: an unusual adverse effect.

Ann Med Surg (Lond)

December 2024

Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Daffodil International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Introduction And Importance: Bartter syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder affecting renal tubular function leading to disturbances in electrolyte and volume homeostasis. It can also manifest as Bartter-like syndrome (BLS), a rare side effect of certain medications. Polymyxin-B, an antibiotic used to treat multidrug-resistant infections is infrequently associated with BLS.

Article Synopsis
  • Contrast-enhanced dual-energy mammography (DEM) can detect tumors better in dense breast tissue than standard mammography, but traditional iodine-based contrast agents have significant limitations, including use restrictions and high doses.* -
  • The study introduces ultrasmall molybdenum disulfide nanoparticles (MoS NPs) that are biocompatible and produce higher image contrast in DEM compared to conventional contrast agents like iopamidol.* -
  • MoS NPs also show rapid elimination from the body, reducing concerns about long-term toxicity, which suggests they could effectively serve as dual-modality contrast agents for both DEM and CT imaging.*
