BTLA and HVEM: Emerging players in the tumor microenvironment and cancer progression.

Cytokine

October 2023

Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Khalid University, Abha, Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • Immunotherapy, especially immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), is changing cancer treatment by targeting proteins that prevent the immune system from attacking cancer cells, with key examples being PD-1, PD-L1, and CTLA-4.
  • Further research has revealed another checkpoint mechanism involving BTLA and HVEM, which are linked to immune regulation and have been found overexpressed in several cancers like lung, ovarian, and glioblastoma.
  • The exploration of the BTLA/HVEM checkpoint is important for advancing immunotherapy options, aiming to enhance cancer treatment outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Cellular lipid membranes act as barriers against viral infections and can also serve as interaction points for viruses, with lipid rafts playing a crucial role in the viral life cycle.
  • The enzyme PCSK9 is important for maintaining cholesterol levels and has become a target for therapeutic interventions, such as FDA-approved inhibitors like inclisiran and evolocumab, which lower LDL cholesterol levels.
  • Recent studies suggest that inhibiting PCSK9 may not only help with cholesterol management in HIV-positive patients but could also have protective effects against various viruses, including hepatitis C, dengue, and possibly SARS-CoV-2, highlighting its potential as a novel treatment approach.

Genetic information of bean seed traits can be an immense help to the breeder in selection of suitable genotypes and the appropriate breeding strategies. Therefore, the investigation aims to assess the genetic variability and to elucidate the genetic analysis of seed dietary fibre, carbohydrate, seed calcium and phosphorus contents of Phaseolus vulgaris in the high Guinean Savannah zone conditions. 5 × 5 half-diallel crosses of these traits were conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications.

Heart transplantation, the gold standard treatment for end-stage heart failure, is limited by heart graft shortage, justifying expansion of the donor pool. Currently, static cold storage (SCS) of hearts from donations after brainstem death remains the standard practice, but it is usually limited to 240 min. Prolonged cold ischemia and ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) have been recognized as major causes of post-transplant graft failure.

Cinobufagin exerts an antitumor effect in non-small-cell lung cancer by blocking STAT3 signaling.

J Cancer

October 2023

Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, 44 Cultural West Road, Shandong Province 250012, China.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common histological subtype of lung cancer with significant morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. Cinobufagin, the primary component of Chansu and the major active ingredient of cinobufacini, has attracted widespread attention for its excellent anticancer effects, but its activity remains poorly characterized in NSCLC. The functions of cinobufagin treatment in anti-tumor was evaluated using various in vitro and in vivo assays.
