The natural history of splinter haemorrhages on the optic disc is an argument in favour of the belief that the glaucomatous process starts in the small vessels of the papilla. The probable existence of factors in the aqueous, whose generation depend on the state of oxygenation in the posterior parts of the eye and which affect the outflow resistance, supports the idea that the pressure increase is a secondary effect. Reduced perfusion by increased IOP or reduced blood pressure etc. is likely to accelerate a process already begun in the papilla.

Background: The greater San Francisco metropolitan bay area is home to 270,000 Filipino immigrants and the second largest Filipino-American population in the United States. Despite this, Filipino-Americans are aggregated with the general "Asian-American" category, making it a challenge to obtain accurate population health data on social determinants of health. One area that is concerning is the lack of research on Filipino-American eye health experiences.

Objective: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy and the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. However, the early detection of glaucoma remains challenging, as chronic forms of glaucoma remain largely asymptomatic until considerable irreversible visual field deficits have ensued. Thus, biomarkers that facilitate early diagnosis and treatment for glaucoma patients with a high risk of progression are pressing.
