In experiments on mice it was demonstrated that S-containing methylfuran derivatives were highly radioprotective (50-70% survival of exposed animals). The preparations under study did not influence the redox potential in tissues and did not change the content of nonprotein SH-groups in the radiosensitive organs.

While autoxidation of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) is a potential source of furan and its derivatives, the regulatory obligation to enrich powdered infant formulae (PIF) with some of these compounds might raise safety issues. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of formulation and home storage conditions on the generation of furan and its derivatives in PIF. Furan, 2-methylfuran (2-MF) and 3-methylfuran (3-MF) were monitored by a validated SHS-GC-Q Exactive-Orbitrap MS method in six PIF formulated with high or low concentrations of different PUFAs (ALA, ARA, DHA), pro-oxidants (iron) and anti-oxidants (vitamins) and stored for 21 days under more or less oxidizing home storage conditions, including temperature (19 °C or 40 °C) and oxygen exposure (protected or not from ambient air).

Protective effect of a novel furan hybrid chalcone against bisphenol A-induced craniofacial developmental toxicity in zebrafish embryos.

February 2025

Toxicology and Pharmacology Laboratory, Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, 603203, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, India. Electronic address:

Bisphenol A (BPA), a pervasive endocrine disruptor, is known to cause significant developmental toxicity, particularly affecting craniofacial structures through oxidative stress and apoptosis. A novel furan hybrid chalcone derivative, 3-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl)-1-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DK04), specifically with a hydroxyl group for its antioxidant properties and a nitro group for enhanced electron-withdrawing ability, was evaluated for its potential to mitigate these toxic effects. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to BPA and co-treated with various concentrations of DK04.

The microwave spectrum of 2,3-dimethylfuran was investigated using a Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer under supersonic expansion. The molecule possesses two inequivalent methyl internal rotors, causing the splitting of each rotational transition into five torsional species. A total of 337 torsional transitions were assigned and fitted in a global fit with the program XIAM, where accurate and physically meaningful geometry and internal rotation parameters could be deduced.

Formation of furan and furan derivatives in baby food products.

Food Chem

February 2025

Department of Food Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry (170a), Institute of Food Chemistry, University of Hohenheim, 70599 Stuttgart, Germany. Electronic address:

A comprehensive analysis of 89 commercial baby food samples showed the highest levels of furan in ready-to-eat full meals and vegetable purees (12-118 μg/kg). The alkylated furans (2- and 3-methylfuran, 2-ethylfuran, 2-pentylfuran) were predominantly found in these baby food categories. Furfuryl alcohol was notably abundant in ready-to-eat cereal porridge (3,550-13,100 μg/kg).

November 2024

Toxicology and Pharmacology Laboratory, Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, 603203, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu, India. Electronic address:

Foodborne pathogens continue to challenge public health due to their ability to cause severe illness and their increasing resistance to current antimicrobial treatments. Listeria monocytogenes is a resilient foodborne pathogen that poses significant risks to vulnerable populations, leading to severe infections and high hospitalization rates. The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) strains of L.
