Keratoprosthesis (KPro) is a surgical procedure largely confined to end-stage corneal blindness correction, where artificial cornea substitutes the native tissue. Though the problem of bio integration was addressed partially by strategic utilization of synthetic polymers and native tissue, major challenges like optical performance and design-associated post-operative complications of KPro were overlooked. Herein, a novel intralamellar KPro design is conceptualized to address these challenges using a light-transparent poly(2-hydroxy ethylmethacrylate) (pHEMA) hydrogel with good shape memory.

Objectives: Following the Ross operation, the pulmonary autograft undergoes structural changes (remodelling). We sought to determine the extent, nature and possible determinants of long-term remodelling in the different components of the pulmonary autograft.
Methods: Ten pulmonary autografts and 12 normal control valves (6 pulmonary and 6 aortic) were examined by conventional histology, immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical performance and biocompatibility of a novel synthetic corneal device.
Methods: Synthetic, single-piece, foldable, suturable, optic-and-skirt design prototype devices were fabricated using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. A combination of intralamellar and full-thickness penetrating techniques was used for implantation.

Unlabelled: The relationship between elastic fibre disorders and disc degeneration, aging and progression of spine deformity have been discussed in a small number of studies. However, the clinical relevance of elastic fibres in the annulus fibrosus (AF) of the disc is poorly understood. Ultrastructural visualization of elastic fibres is an important step towards understanding their structure-function relationship.

Disc degeneration is a common medical affliction whose origins are not fully understood. An improved understanding of its underlying mechanisms could lead to the development of more effective treatments. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of (1) degeneration, (2) circumferential region and (3) strain rate on the microscale mechanical properties (toe region modulus, linear modulus, extensibility, phase angle) of individual fibre bundles in the anulus fibrosus lamellae of the human intervertebral disc.
