Introduction: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are an important imaging marker for cerebral small vessel diseases, but their risk factors and cognitive associations have not been well documented in populations of different ethnicities and/or from different geographical regions.

Methods: We investigated how WMHs were associated with vascular risk factors and cognition in both Whites and Asians, using data from five population-based cohorts of non-demented older individuals from Australia, Singapore, South Korea, and Sweden ( = 1946). WMH volumes (whole brain, periventricular, and deep) were quantified with UBO Detector and harmonized using the ComBat model.

Article Synopsis
  • Tau is a significant factor in Alzheimer's disease, and lowering tau levels may help reduce the associated pathology.
  • A phase 1b clinical trial tested a tau-targeting treatment called MAPT, focusing on its safety and effectiveness in reducing tau levels in patients with mild Alzheimer's.
  • Results showed that MAPT was generally safe with mild side effects, and patients receiving higher doses experienced over a 50% reduction in tau protein levels in their cerebrospinal fluid after treatment.

Introduction: The field of geriatric psychiatry has in recent decades developed into an independent discipline, incorporating elements of psychiatry, neurology and internal medicine. In view of demographic changes, this field is becoming increasingly relevant for primary care and undergraduate medical training. So far, however, there is little educational guidance for instructional design of geriatric psychiatry in undergraduate medical education.
