Avian influenza (AI) is endemic and frequently causes seasonal outbreaks in winter in Bangladesh due to high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 and low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H9N2. Among avian influenza A viruses (AIV), H5, H7, and H9 subtypes have the most zoonotic potential. Captive birds in zoos and safari parks are used for educational, recreational, breeding, and conservational purposes in Bangladesh.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a needs assessment of a potential social service resource telephone program component among high risk youth who received the Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND) classroom-based program (approximately 1 year earlier). Results supported youths' overwhelming receptiveness of a social service referral program. The vast majority of respondents indicated a strong desire for resource and referral information on vocational, educational, recreational, transportation, and mental health and drug counseling.

Methadone maintenance has become the treatment of choice for heroin addiction because of its beneficial effects on illicit opiate use and criminality. Yet methadone maintenance falls short in a variety of ways; methadone clients continue to use drugs, experience high rates of psychopathology and alcoholism, and fail to become employed and integrated into the community. These problems are endemic in addicts, but also can be attributed to a host of strategic and tactical failures in methadone maintenance treatment itself.
