Gas-liquid chromatography was used to quantitate the arabinitol concentration in the sera of patients with candidiasis and in that of control patients. Serum arabinitol was elevated in 59% (n = 34) of patients with Candida sepsis, in 39% (n = 38) with Candida colonization, in 14% (n = 62) with bacterial sepsis, and in 0% (n = 11) of normal persons. The above patients were subsequently divided on the basis of renal function. Of those with decreased renal function, serum arabinitol was elevated in 89, 92, and 50% of patients with Candida sepsis, Candida colonization, and bacterial sepsis, respectively. Of those with normal renal function, serum arabinitol was elevated in only 23 and 14% of patients with Candida sepsis and Candida colonization, respectively. When serum arabinitol/creatine ratios were calculated for patients with both increased arabinitol and increased creatinine, elevated ratios were obtained in 69, 36, and 0% of patients with Candida sepsis, Candida colonization, and bacterial sepsis, respectively.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to perform a comparative analysis of metabolite levels in serum and milk obtained from cows fed on different concentrate to forage feed ratios.
Methods: Eight lactating Holstein cows were divided into two groups: a high forage ratio diet (HF; 80% Italian ryegrass and 20% concentrate of daily intake of dry matter) group and a high concentrate diet (HC; 20% Italian ryegrass and 80% concentrate) group. Blood was collected from the jugular vein, and milk was sampled using a milking machine.

Despite the introduction of new antifungal agents and changes in clinical practices, its morbidity and mortality rates and healthcare costs remain persistently high. This is mainly because of the serious underlying conditions of infected patients (critically ill or severely immunocompromised patients) and the difficulties encountered in early diagnosing this opportunistic mycosis and initiating prompt and appropriate antifungal therapy.

We prospectively evaluated a combination of fungal biomarkers in adult haematology patients with focus on their clinical utility at different time points during the course of infection. In total, 135 patients were monitored once to twice weekly for serum (1-3)-ß-d-glucan (BG), galactomannan (GM), bis-methyl-gliotoxin and urinary d-arabinitol/l-arabinitol ratio. In all, 13 cases with proven or probable invasive fungal disease (IFD) were identified.

D-Ribitol, a five-carbon sugar alcohol, is an important metabolite in the pentose phosphate pathway; it is an integral part of riboflavin (vitamin B2) and cell wall polysaccharides in most Gram-positive and a few Gram-negative bacteria. Antibodies specific to D-ribitol were generated in New Zealand white rabbits by using reductively aminated D-ribose-BSA conjugate as the immunogen. MALDI-TOF and amino group analyses of ribitol-BSA conjugate following 120 h reaction showed ~27-30 mol of ribitol conjugated per mole BSA.
