A Two-Step Protocol for Isolation and Maintenance of Lung Cancer Primary 3D Cultures.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2024

Translational Research Laboratory, Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia, 42122 Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Background/objectives: Despite the introduction of innovative therapeutics, lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer-related death. For this reason, lung cancer still requires deep characterization to identify cellular and molecular targets that can be used to develop novel therapeutic strategies. Three-dimensional cellular models, including patient-derived organoids (PDOs), represent useful tools to study lung cancer biology and may be employed in the future as predictive tools in therapeutic decisions.

Patient-related prognostic factors for function and pain after shoulder arthroplasty: a systematic review.

Syst Rev

November 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Data Science, University Medical Center Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Background: While shared decision making is a cornerstone of orthopedic care, orthopedic surgeons face challenges in tailoring their advice and expectation management to individual shoulder arthroplasty patients due to the lack of systematically summarized evidence-based knowledge. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of current knowledge on independent predictive effects of patient-related factors on functional and pain-related outcomes after shoulder arthroplasty.

Methods: We included longitudinal cohort studies including patients receiving total or reverse shoulder arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty for primary osteoarthritis or cuff tear arthropathy.

Primary dysmenorrhea is considered one of the main causes of pelvic pain during a woman's childbearing years, resulting in poor quality of life. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) in painful symptomatology improvement and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intake reduction in women with primary dysmenorrhea (PD) compared with a control group in the short, medium, and long terms. A single-blind, controlled clinical trial was developed.

Background: Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), mainly papillary (PTC), at low risk of recurrence is currently managed with active surveillance strategies or less aggressive surgeries. However, total thyroidectomy with I treatment is still performed both if these tumors are diagnosed before or occasionally after surgery. This real-life study aimed to evaluate the rate of biochemical, structural, and functional events in a large series of consecutive DTCs at low risk of recurrence treated by total thyroidectomy, but not with I, in a medium-long-term follow-up.

Chronic Cocaine Use and Parkinson's Disease: An Interpretative Model.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

August 2024

VP Dole Research Group, G. De Lisio Institute of Behavioural Sciences, Via di Pratale 3, 56121 Pisa, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Cocaine use has become a significant public health issue, with roughly 24.6 million users globally and 1 million diagnosed with cocaine use disorder, according to the 2023 World Drug Report.
  • While short-term effects of cocaine are well-documented, there is a lack of comprehensive data on its medium and long-term impacts, which suggest increased risks for cardiovascular issues and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • The paper proposes that chronic cocaine use leads to neurobiological changes affecting neurotransmitter systems, particularly dopaminergic pathways, which may increase vulnerability to neurodegenerative disorders and highlights the need for further research to inform therapeutic interventions.
