The efficacy of rifampin prophylaxis (20 mg/kg/day in two doses for four days) in eliminating pharyngeal Hemophilus influenzae type b from household contacts of 38 patients with invasive Hemophilus disease was evaluated in a prospective, placebo-controlled fashion. At the end of treatment, rifampin efficacy was 91% in subjects younger than 5 years of age and 100% in those subjects older than 5 years. The H influenzae type b carrier rate of rifampin-treated subjects was significantly smaller than that of placebo-treated subjects one month after prophylaxis. However, 22% to 25% of rifampin-treated carriers younger than 5 years of age were colonized with H influenzae type b, based on cultures obtained one to four weeks after prophylaxis, while approximately 75% of placebo-treated carriers were still positive at this time.

Exposure to influenza A virus (IAV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is well-known to increase the risk of pneumonia in humans. Type I interferon (IFN-I) is a hallmark response to acute viral infections, and alveolar macrophages (AMs) constitute the first line of airway defense against opportunistic bacteria. Our study reveals that virus-induced IFN-I receptor (IFNAR1) signaling directly impairs AM-dependent antibacterial protection.

Background: We evaluated UK nurses' preferences for pediatric hexavalent vaccine attributes.
Research Design And Methods: In a discrete-choice experiment study, 150 nurses chose between 2 hypothetical pediatric hexavalent vaccines with varying attribute levels (device type, plastic in packaging, time on the market, and time the vaccine can stay safely at room temperature) in a series of choice questions. Using random-parameters logit-model estimates, conditional relative attribute importance (CRAI) and odds ratios (ORs) were calculated.

Purpose: In patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), infections, particularly pneumonias, are the most common cause of hospital admissions and death after cardiovascular diseases. It is recommended that dialysis patients receive the pneumococcal vaccine every five years and the influenza vaccine annually. Our study aims to determine the awareness and factors affecting influenza and pneumococcal vaccination rates in hemodialysis patients.

Background: Revealing the clinical manifestations and associations of COVID-19 before and after negative transition remains an area of significant uncertainty. The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical characteristics observed during and after Omicron infection among a specific population, namely healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: From November 4, 2022, to January 15, 2023, HCWs in our hospital were enrolled to document clinical symptoms, prevention, and treatment for COVID-19 using a structured questionnaire.

Background: This study examines the distribution characteristics of pathogenic bacteria in respiratory infections and their relationship with inflammatory markers to guide clinical drug use.
Methods: We selected 120 patients with lower respiratory tract infection in the electronic medical record system of Xinjiang Provincial People's Hospital from March 2019 to March 2023 for a case-control study. Using Indirect Immunofluorescence Antibody test(IFA), blood routine, C-reactive Protein (CRP), and High-sensitivity C-reactive Protein(hsCRP), we detected nine respiratory pathogens (Respiratory syncytial virus; Influenza A virus; Influenza B virus; Parainfluenza virus; Adenovirus; Mycoplasma pneumoniae; Chlamydia pneumoniae; Legionella pneumophila type 1; Rickettsia Q) in all patients and analyzed their distribution and correlation.
