We have constructed a cDNA clone library from poly(A)+ RNA of very-late-period choriogenic silkmoth follicles. Clone DNAs that hybridize preferentially to RNA from the aeropyle crown region of the follicle (versus the flat region) were selected, and all could be placed in one of two homology groups. The two groups represent sequences encoding the very-late-period chorion proteins E1 and E2; this was established by hybrid-selected translation coupled with specific antibody precipitation. Regionalized synthesis of chorion proteins is restricted to the very late period, and its control can now be studied at the nucleic acid level.

Implications of intracrystalline OC17 on the protection of lattice incorporated proteins.

Biogenic CaCO formation is regulated by crystallization proteins during crystal growth. Interactions of proteins with nascent mineral surfaces trigger proteins to be incorporated into the crystal lattice. As a result of incorporation, these intracrystalline proteins are protected in the lattice, an example of which is ancient eggshell proteins that have persisted in CaCO for thousands of years even under harsh environmental conditions.

In nearly every species of insect, embryonic development takes place outside of the mother's body and is entirely dependent on the elements that the mother had previously stored within the eggs. It is well known that the follicle cells (FCs) synthesize the eggshell (chorion) components during the process of choriogenesis, the final step of oogenesis before fertilization. These cells have developed a specialization in the massive production of chorion proteins, which are essential for the protection and survival of the embryo.

The chorion fulfills important functions in fish embryos, including protecting the embryo during development. The characterization of the protein profile of this envelope could be used as a bioindicator in the evaluation of the quality of embryonic development. The object of this work was to validate a standardized protocol for protein extraction from chorion of embryos at 280 accumulated thermal units (ATU) by comparing and combining existing methods.

The insect eggshell is a multifunctional structure with several important roles, including generating an entry point for sperm via the micropyle before oviposition, serving as an oviposition substrate attachment surface, and functioning as a protective layer during embryo development. Eggshell proteins play major roles in eggshell tanning and hardening following oviposition and provide molecular cues that define dorsal-ventral axis formation. Precise eggshell formation during ovarian follicle maturation is critical for normal embryo development and the synthesis of a defective eggshell often gives rise to inviable embryos.
