An integrated investigation of mitochondrial genes in COPD reveals the causal effect of NDUFS2 by regulating pulmonary macrophages.

Biol Direct

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Geriatrics of Jiangsu Province, Department of Geriatrics, The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, 300 Guangzhou Road, Nanjing, 210029, Jiangsu, China.

Background: Despite the increasing body of evidence that mitochondrial activities implicate in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we are still far from a causal-logical and mechanistic understanding of the mitochondrial malfunctions in COPD pathogenesis.

Results: Differential expression genes (DEGs) from six publicly available bulk human lung tissue transcriptomic datasets of COPD patients were intersected with the known mitochondria-related genes from MitoCarta3.0 to obtain mitochondria-related DEGs associated with COPD (MitoDEGs).

This research investigates the pulp and paper industry's transition to sustainability by valorizing unused roadside and natural grasses for paper production. Large-scale production from residual grass poses multifaceted challenges, requiring collaboration across stakeholders, from biomass collection to manufacturing. To understand key drivers and barriers within this complex system, experts from various fields, including local farmers, researchers, policymakers, and industry executives were interviewed, leading to the development of a Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM).

The cochlear nuclear complex (CN), the starting point for all central auditory processing, encompasses a suite of neuronal cell types highly specialized for neural coding of acoustic signals. However, the molecular logic governing these specializations remains unknown. By combining single-nucleus RNA sequencing and Patch-seq analysis, we reveal a set of transcriptionally distinct cell populations encompassing all previously observed types and discover multiple hitherto unknown subtypes with anatomical and physiological identity.

Automated Lesion and Feature Extraction Pipeline for Brain MRIs with Interpretability.

Neuroinformatics

January 2025

Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA.

This paper introduces the Automated Lesion and Feature Extraction (ALFE) pipeline, an open-source, Python-based pipeline that consumes MR images of the brain and produces anatomical segmentations, lesion segmentations, and human-interpretable imaging features describing the lesions in the brain. ALFE pipeline is modeled after the neuroradiology workflow and generates features that can be used by physicians for quantitative analysis of clinical brain MRIs and for machine learning applications. The pipeline uses a decoupled design which allows the user to customize the image processing, image registrations, and AI segmentation tools without the need to change the business logic of the pipeline.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer's & Neurodegenerative Diseases, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, TX, USA.

Background: Disrupted sleep patterns have been shown to exacerbate Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk, potentially because of sleep's role in memory consolidation and synaptic plasticity. Recent evidence highlights that high brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, a protein enabling neuroplasticity and memory functions, could play a protective role in age related cognitive impairment. We examined the association between total sleep time and cognition, and BDNF levels as a potential modifier.
