Article Synopsis
  • Oliguria, a condition characterized by decreased urine output, may be misinterpreted as acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients post-surgery, despite being a potential adaptive response during surgery.
  • A study analyzing 1,476 patients revealed that 34.4% exhibited oliguria within the first 24 hours after surgery, with certain factors like vasopressor use and non-elective procedures linked to increased risk.
  • Although oliguria was associated with a higher rate of AKI development compared to non-oliguric patients, 87.6% of oliguric patients did not show kidney dysfunction based on serum creatinine levels, questioning the accuracy of oliguria as an indicator for AKI.

The setting up of a multi-disciplinary aortic team for the discussion of complex cases has been already proposed; it is also supported by the ACC/AHA. Surgeons and radiologists, more or less other physicians such as cardiologists, geneticists, rheumatologists/internal medicine specialists and pathologists are involved into such a team.

August 2024

STIMULUS (Research and Teaching Neuromodulation Uz Brussel) Research Group, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium.

Introduction: Recent evidence supports the contribution of gut microbiota dysbiosis to the pathophysiology of rheumatic diseases, neuropathic pain, and neurodegenerative disorders. The bidirectional gut-brain communication network and the occurrence of chronic pain both involve contributions of the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. Nevertheless, the current understanding of the association between gut microbiota and chronic pain is still not clear.

A variety of terms, such as "antiepileptic," "anticonvulsant," and "antiseizure" have been historically applied to medications for the treatment of seizure disorders. Terminology is important because using terms that do not accurately reflect the action of specific treatments may result in a misunderstanding of their effects and inappropriate use. The present International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) position paper used a Delphi approach to develop recommendations on English-language terminology applicable to pharmacological agents currently approved for treating seizure disorders.
