Epithelial and peritubular cells associated with the reproductive tract of the snail, Limnaea stagnalis, contain an extensive system of endoplasmic reticulum that is often dilated with many closely packed intracisternal tubules. The intracisternal tubules are approximately 24-28 nm in diameter and they are often hexagonally packed. They have a two-layered wall, possess fine interconnections, and extend linearly for considerable distances, but angular bends in the tubules also occur. Mitochondria in the peritubular cells contain solid, filamentous structures 9-12 nm in diameter and triangular-shaped structures when sectioned in the mitochondrial matrix.

Background: Repression of retrotransposons is essential for genome integrity and the development of germ cells. Among retrotransposons, the establishment of CpG DNA methylation and epigenetic silencing of LINE1 (L1) elements and the intracisternal A particle (IAP) endogenous retrovirus (ERV) is dependent upon the piRNA pathway during embryonic germ cell reprogramming. Furthermore, the Piwi protein Mili, guided by piRNAs, cleaves expressed L1 transcripts to post-transcriptionally enforce L1 silencing in meiotic cells.

Regulation of the Golgi complex by phospholipid remodeling enzymes.

Biochim Biophys Acta

August 2012

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA.

The mammalian Golgi complex is a highly dynamic organelle consisting of stacks of flattened cisternae with associated coated vesicles and membrane tubules that contribute to cargo import and export, intra-cisternal trafficking, and overall Golgi architecture. At the morphological level, all of these structures are continuously remodeled to carry out these trafficking functions. Recent advances have shown that continual phospholipid remodeling by phospholipase A (PLA) and lysophospholipid acyltransferase (LPAT) enzymes, which deacylate and reacylate Golgi phospholipids, respectively, contributes to this morphological remodeling.

Ochratoxin A and citrinin nephrotoxicity in New Zealand White rabbits: an ultrastructural assessment.

Mycopathologia

January 2007

Mycotic and Mycotoxic Disease Laboratory, Division of Pathology, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, IVRI Road, Izatnagar, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, 243 122, India.

In the present investigation, ochratoxin A (OTA) (0.75 mg/kg feed) and citrinin (CIT) (15 mg/kg feed) were fed alone and in combination to young growing New Zealand White rabbits for 60 days to evaluate renal ultrastructural alterations. The severity and intensity of renal ultrastructural changes varied with the type of the treatment, and predominant and consistent lesions were recorded in the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) lining cells.

Aims: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare low-grade soft-tissue sarcoma with locally aggressive and metastasizing potential. Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma has distinctive clinical, light microscopic, immunophenotypic, cytogenetic and ultrastructural features. Evidence that extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma often shows neuroendocrine features was first provided by Chhieng et al.

Malignant melanoma (MM), both primary and metastatic, may be associated with a prominent myxoid stromal reaction causing diagnostic confusion on fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), most often with sarcomas that demonstrate a myxoid stroma, particularly malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). We present a case of a 32-yr-old man with no past medical history who presented with a unilateral neck mass clinically suspicious for lymphoma. FNAB produced a specimen composed of large sheets of anaplastic cells encased in a myxoid stroma that was S100 and vimentin-positive but HMB-45-negative.
