Dysregulation of inflammation is hypothesized to play a crucial role in the severe complications of COVID-19, with the IL-1/IL-6 pathway being central. Here, we report on the treatment of eight severe COVID-19 pneumonia patients-seven hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs) in Greece and one non-ICU patient in the Netherlands-with the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist Anakinra. All patients scored positive for the hemophagocytosis score (HScore) and were diagnosed with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis (sHLH) characterized by pancytopenia, hyper-coagulation, acute kidney injury, and hepatobiliary dysfunction.

Hairy cell leukemia is an uncommon hematologic malignancy characterized by pancytopenia and marked susceptibility to infection. Tremendous progress in the management of patients with this disease has resulted in high response rates and improved survival, yet relapse and an appropriate approach to re-treatment present continuing areas for research. The disease and its effective treatment are associated with immunosuppression.

Background Aims: Transplantation of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) within the framework of hematologic oncology or inherited diseases may be associated with complications such as engraftment failure and long-term pancytopenia. HSC engraftment can be improved, for example by co-transplantation with mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Recently, a new multipotent MSC line from umbilical cord blood, unrestricted somatic stem cells (USSC), has been described.

Benzene is an important industrial chemical. At certain levels, benzene has been found to produce aplastic anemia, pancytopenia, myeloblastic anemia and genotoxic effects in humans. Metabolism by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases and myeloperoxidase to hydroquinone, phenol, and other metabolites contributes to benzene toxicity.

Introduction: Hodgkin's disease with initially predominant bone marrow involvement is observed in 1% of cases.
Observation: A case of Hodgkin's disease with massive bone marrow invasion, manifested by pancytopenia in the context of fever and alteration in general status of health, with little or non superficial peripheral lymph nodes. The bone marrow biopsy revealed extensive myelofibrosis with rare Reed-Sternberg cells.
