Translational approaches to the study of eosinophils in vasculitis.

Rheumatology (Oxford)

March 2025

Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, Human Eosinophil Section, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Eosinophil basic biology, including immunoregulatory functions, plays a complex role in a myriad of disorders where eosinophils play a role. Established in vivo and in vitro models and novel emerging techniques for studying eosinophils are integral to parsing the involvement of eosinophils in the pathogenesis of disorders including vasculitis. Knowledge of translational approaches from eosinophil-associated diseases and their application to eosinophilic vasculitis are highlighted.

Nasal allergen provocation test: updated indications and diagnostic accuracy.

Curr Opin Allergy Clin Immunol

March 2025

Department of Otolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, Navamindradhiraj University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Purpose Of Review: The Nasal Allergen Provocation Test (NAPT) is a valuable diagnostic tool for allergic rhinitis, particularly in cases where conventional tests, such as the skin prick test (SPT) and serum-specific IgE (sIgE), yield inconclusive results. By replicating real-life allergen exposure in a controlled setting, NAPT enables the assessment of allergen-specific nasal reactivity. This article aims to review the current knowledge of NAPT.

Background: Insect bite hypersensitivity in horses ("sweet itch") is a common pruritic, chronic, seasonal, and recurrent dermatitis affecting approximately 10% of horses in France and is a major concern for the horse industry and private owners. This dermatitis results from an allergic reaction to the saliva of specific biting flies (Diptera: Nematocera), primarily from the Culicoides genus. Given the frequent occurrence of this health problem and the limited investigation in France, we conducted a field survey in the vicinity of a riding stable in southwestern France with a reported chronic case of recurrent horse dermatitis to (i) characterize the Culicoides species associated with horse populations and (ii) estimate the relative abundance of the different species identified based on the trapping site location.

Beyond the "Master" Role in Allergy: Insights into Intestinal Mast Cell Plasticity and Gastrointestinal Diseases.

Biomedicines

January 2025

Department of Molecular Medicine, Laboratory Affiliated to Istituto Pasteur Italia-Fondazione Cenci Bolognetti, Sapienza University of Rome, 00161 Rome, Italy.

Mast cells (MCs) are essential components of the immune system that enter the circulation as immature bone marrow progenitors and differentiate in peripheral organs under the influence of microenvironment factors. As tissue-resident secretory immune cells, MCs rapidly detect the presence of bacteria and parasites because they harbor many surface receptors, which enable their activation via a multitude of stimuli. MC activation has been traditionally linked to IgE-mediated allergic reactions, but MCs play a pivotal role in different physiological and pathological processes.

Agar-Dilution Is Comparable to Broth Dilution for MIC Determination in .

Antibiotics (Basel)

February 2025

Division of Infection and Immunity, Department of Medical Microbiology, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff University, Cardiff CF14 4XN, UK.

Background: (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis in high-income countries. While intrapartum antibiotic screening reduces this risk, increasing resistance to macrolides and lincosamides in Europe since the 1990s has limited therapeutic options for penicillin-allergic patients. Reports of reduced beta-lactam susceptibility in GBS further emphasise the need for robust antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance.
