Serum Cortisol and Cardiovascular Disease Risk-A Potential Biomarker.

Curr Cardiol Rev

January 2025

Division of Applied Biomedical Science and Biotechnology, School of Health Sciences, IMU University, 126, Jalan Jalil Perkasa 19, Bukit Jalil, 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Cardiovascular Disease [CVD], the leading cause of death globally, poses a significant burden on the healthcare sector. Its association with stress and Cushing's Syndrome has driven cortisol, the 'stress hormone,' to be a potential candidate in determining CVD risk. Cortisol synthesis and release through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal [HPA] axis are regulated by several hormones and receptors involved in the pathological cascade towards CVD.

Decoding Epilepsy: Prickle2 and Multifaceted Molecular Pathway Connections.

Curr Pharm Des

January 2025

Hubei Key Laboratory of Tumor Microenvironment and Immunotherapy, China Three Gorges University, Yichang, Hubei, China.

Background: The Prickle2 (Pk2) gene shows promising potential in uncovering the underlying causes of epilepsy, a neurological disorder that is currently not well understood. This paper utilizes the online tool PubMed to gather and condense information on the involvement of PCP channels and the associated roles of PCP pathway molecules in the onset of epilepsy. These findings are significant for advancing epilepsy treatment.

The presence of N-nitrosamine impurities in pharmaceutical products is well known. In 2019, it resulted in drug recall by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Soon, several groups identified the presence of many N-nitrosamines (NAs) in various Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and drug formulations worldwide.

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) has fundamentally transformed cancer treat-ment by unlocking the potency of CD8+ T cells by targeting the suppression of the CTLA-4 and PD-1/PD-L1 pathways. Nevertheless, ICBs are associated with the risk of severe side effects and resistance in certain patients, driving the search for novel and safer immune check-point modulators. Monoamine Oxidase A (MAO-A) plays an unexpected role in the field of cancer.

Atomically Dispersed Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon Catalysts for Acidic Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

School of Integrated Circuits, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, P. R. China.

Designing efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under demanding acidic environments plays a critical role in advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts with atomically dispersed metals have gained attention for their affordability, excellent catalytic performance, and distinctive features including consistent active sites and high atomic utilization. Over the past decade, significant achievements have been made in this field.
