Endothelial cell alterations are considered to be a primary event in thrombosis and atherosclerosis. The adhesion of red cells from diabetic patients or patients with sickle cell anemia was measured using endothelial cell culture and a radiometric technique. The adhesion was significantly increased (P less than 0.001). Ultrastructure observation of red cells adhering to endothelial cells showed endothelial cell deformations, membrane modifications and formation of an anchoring device. Morphological changes support the hypothesis of an endothelial cell stimulation or damage during adhesion already suggested by the increased prostacyclin release during red cell adhesion.

A growing body of evidence suggest that the stem cell antigen-1 expressing (Sca-1) cells in the heart may be the cardiac endothelial stem/progenitor cells. Their endothelial cell (EC) functions, and their role in RV physiology and pathophysiology of right heart failure (RHF) remains poorly defined. The lymphatic vasculature plays critical roles in maintaining fluid homeostasis, transporting lipid, and facilitating immune surveillance. A growing body of work has identified lymphatic dysfunction as contributing to the severity of myriad diseases and to systemic inflammation, as well as modulating drug responses. Here, we review efforts to reconstruct lymphatic vessels in vitro toward establishing humanized, functional models to advance understanding of lymphatic biology and pathophysiology.
