[Incus ossiculoplasty. 5 years' results].

Ann Otolaryngol Chir Cervicofac

Published: January 1985

A 5-year follow up study of functional results of transposition of the anvil was conducted in 114 patients. Audiometric gains obtained could be rated as satisfactory since closure of more than half of the Rinne was obtained in 70% of cases and the gain was maintained over long periods.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic ear diseases often lead to ossicular defects, requiring the use of ossicular reconstruction prostheses like TORP (total ossicular replacement prosthesis) and PORP (partial ossicular replacement prosthesis) to restore hearing continuity.
  • - Research shows that using a malleus to footplate reconstruction yields better mechanical outcomes than malleus to stapes superstructure, but long-term effectiveness of TORP versus PORP remains unclear.
  • - A study involving 60 patients with Austin type A defects found significant post-operative improvements in hearing for both TORP and PORP groups, with 90% of patients showing mild hearing loss after surgery compared to their pre-operative condition.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates treatment approaches for ossicular chain trauma, focusing on a new classification system for traumatic dislocations during surgery.
  • The researchers analyzed 15 patients, categorizing their injuries into Type I (without stapediovestibular dislocation) and Type II (with stapediovestibular dislocation), with specific findings on the types of dislocations and their causes.
  • Postoperative outcomes showed significant hearing improvement in most patients, with different surgical techniques used, while all experienced vertigo and tinnitus after trauma, highlighting the need for tailored treatments based on trauma type.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study simulated ossicular mobility in 92 cases of ossicular fixation using a finite-element model, and validated findings against measurements from cadaver studies with a new intraoperative system.
  • * The research classified ossicular pathologies into four groups based on mobility, revealing that cases involving combined fixation and otosclerosis required different surgical approaches depending on the degree of fixation.

Article Synopsis
  • The ear ossicles are crucial for transmitting sound and injuries to them can lead to conductive deafness, which may be corrected through a procedure called ossiculoplasty.
  • This study aimed to analyze the sizes and shapes (morphometry) of ear ossicles, using measurements taken from 47 malleus, 46 incus, and 10 stapes samples, considering factors like age, sex, and side.
  • The findings revealed specific average measurements for each type of ossicle and highlighted variations based on population, side, and sex, providing valuable data for improving hearing restoration techniques.
