Experimental hydrosalpinx and salpingostomy in rabbits.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

Published: September 1984

In 137 oviducts of New Zealand white rabbits different kinds of occlusion techniques were tested to induce hydrosalpinges. In 99 oviducts ligatured or clipped both at the fimbrial end and at the ampullary-isthmic junction 67 hydrosalpinges were achieved, whilst in 34 oviducts ligatured or clipped only at the fimbrial end one hydrosalpinx occurred. Most severe histological changes were seen after double clipping. Ligation of the blood vessels to and from the ampulla of 4 oviducts caused no hydrosalpinx formation. After cuff salpingostomy a higher number of patent oviducts was found than after double-loop salpingostomy.

Article Synopsis
  • A rare case of a 45-year-old Ethiopian woman presented with a long-standing left inguinal hernia that included her left ovary and fallopian tube, discovered during elective surgery after imaging confirmed the hernia's presence.
  • Inguinal hernias in women are uncommon, often challenging to diagnose, and may involve female reproductive organs, necessitating surgical intervention, which can vary from simple repair to more complex procedures.
  • The case stresses the need for healthcare providers to be vigilant and consider the possibility of female genital involvement in inguinal hernias to facilitate timely and effective treatment.

The incidence of endometrial cancer (EC) is increasing worldwide, but the specific mechanism of coagulation dysfunction in EC is not fully understood. The objective of the present study was to explore the relationship between autonomic nervous system function and coagulation function in patients with EC using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The study included 100 patients with EC who were treated at the Department of Gynecological Oncology of The First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical University (Bengbu, China) from December 2021 to March 2023.

Is There Still a Role for Sterilization by Tubal Ligation as a Contraceptive Method?

Open Access J Contracept

May 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Stellenbosch, Tygerberg Hospital Francie van Zyl Dr, Cape Town, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • - Tubal ligation has been a method for controlling fertility in women since the late 1800s, but advancements in surgical techniques have made it safer over time.
  • - Recent findings suggest that removing the Fallopian tubes instead of ligating them may lower the risk of ovarian cancer, questioning the appropriateness of current ligation methods.
  • - Long-acting reversible contraception, particularly intrauterine devices, have proven to be more effective, cost-effective, and beneficial for health compared to tubal ligation, reducing the likelihood of regret and need for reversal surgeries.

Introduction: To investigate the in vitro effect of diclofenac on tubal smooth muscle as an alternative to hyoscine-N-butyl bromide, which is used for premedication before hysterosalpingography (HSG).

Material And Methods: Fallopian tubes were retrieved from seven healthy women after bilateral tubal ligation and in vitro contractility and histological studies were conducted using tissue bath and immunohistochemistry.

Results: Diclofenac sodium and hyoscine-N-butyl bromide did not significantly change the basal mean tension; however, they decreased the contractions induced by potassium chloride (KCl).

Given the unremitting obstacles to effectively screen for and treat ovarian cancer (OC), prevention is a necessary countermeasure. The recent discovery of the fallopian tube as the origin of the most common and deadly type of OC, high grade serous cancer (HGSC), makes prevention through salpingectomy possible (Madsen et al., 2015).
