Plasma testosterone (T), 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), T/DHT ratio, estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), E2/T ratio and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OH-P) were measured in 70 patients with prostatic carcinoma (PCA) (T34, N01, M01), after endocrine therapy including: steroidal estrogens (polyestradiol phosphate = Estradurin monthly in injections of 80 mg; estradiol - 17 beta: 5 mg/d), nonsteroidal synthetic estrogens (DES: 5 mg/d; chlorotrianisene = TACE: 24 mg/d; DES-diphosphate = Honvan: 360 mg/d), orchidectomy and their combinations. All these forms of treatment lowered T, DHT, T/DHT ratio and 17-OH-P, the maximal suppression being observed after castration. No further decrease of the mentioned parameters was achieved by estrogen treatment of castrated patients, as compared with castration alone. In the noncastrated patients, steroidal estrogens were less effective than nonsteroidal ones, in terms of lowering T, DHT and T/DHT ratio. Significant decreases in estrone (p less than 0.05) and estradiol (p less than 0.01) levels were observed after nonsteroidal estrogen treatment and castration respectively, and extremely high values of circulating estrogens were found after steroidal estrogen administration.

Introduction: Effects of environmental contaminants (ECs) on endocrine systems have been reported, but few studies assessed associations between ECs and sex hormones (SH) in elderly. Aim of this study was to investigate whether blood concentrations of four classes of ECs were associated with SH concentrations in elderly.
Methods: Samples from participants of the cross-sectional population-based Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors study (PIVUS, 70-year-old men and women, n = 1016) were analyzed using validated mass spectrometry-based methods for SH (testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estrone and estradiol (E2)); 23 persistent organic pollutants (POPs); 8 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS); 4 phthalates and 11 metals.

This study was conducted retrospectively on a cohort of 68 patients with steroid 5 α-reductase 2 (SRD5A2) deficiency and 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD). Whole-exon sequencing revealed 28 variants of SRD5A2, and further analysis identified seven novel mutants. The preponderance of variants was observed in exon 1 and exon 4, specifically within the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-binding region.

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical, hormonal and genetic characteristics of 46XY disorders of sexual development (DSD) patients from South India.
Methods: 46XY DSD patients with a provisional diagnosis of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 (17BHSD3) deficiency, 5 alpha-reductase type 2 deficiency (5ARD2) or partial androgen insensitivity syndrome (PAIS) based on clinical and hormonal analysis were included in this study. All the patients underwent detailed clinical and hormonal evaluations.

Saw palmetto (SAW), the herbal drug used to treat prostatic hyperplasia, exerts its antiproliferative effects by blocking steroid 5 alpha-reductase (SRD5A1) activity, that has also been involved in gingival hyperplasia (GH) pathogenesis. Concurrently, folic acid (FA) could reduce GH prevalence via its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, this study tended to assess the potential therapeutic efficacy of SAW, alone and along with FA, against amlodipine-induced gingival inflammation and overgrowth in rats.
