High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been used in the routine quality control of immunoglobulin preparations to measure the contents of aggregates, dimers, monomers and degradation products. The correlation coefficients between TSK 3000 SW, Ultrogel AcA 34 and Sephacryl S-300 chromatography were calculated and a reasonable correlation was found. The decrease in the potency of anti-tetanus immunoglobulin at room temperature was accompanied by an increase in degradation products. The speed and high sensitivity of HPLC make it suitable for the detection of aggregates in intravenous immunoglobulin preparations.

Sixty-two participants (32f/ 30 m; ∼25 years on average) watched short videos depicting either contagious or non-contagious everyday situations, while their brain activation was continuously measured. Senear-Usher syndrome, or pemphigus erythematosus (PE), is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the coexistence of features from both lupus erythematosus (LE) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF). We describe a 41-year-old patient initially diagnosed with cutaneous and then systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), who after a few years developed new skin lesions: erythematous and erosive eruptions partially covered by crusts located on the trunk and flaccid blisters on the extremities. Direct immunofluorescence of perilesional skin revealed deposits of IgG in the intercellular space of the epidermis and granular deposits of C3 at the dermo-epidermal junction.

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measures the rate at which erythrocytes aggregate and sediment in a fixed time in an anticoagulated blood tube and is expressed as a speed (mm/h). The ESR is still widely used in human medicine mainly as a modified or alternate method to the original Westergren. In veterinary medicine, it was employed in the 1940s-1960s after which it was gradually abandoned or rarely employed.
