Article Abstract

The occurrence of polyneuropathy in connection with systemic sclerosis is extremely rare. Proliferative changes leading to mechanical compression of the nerves have been ascribed to an etiological involvement. In the case reported here, polyneuropathy could be verified morphologically (nervebiopsy). The elevated IgG in the cerebrospinal fluid suggests inflammatory changes of the nerves to be the cause of polyneuropathy.

Polarization is a property of light that describes the oscillation of the electric field vector. Polarized light can be detected by many invertebrate animals, and this visual channel is widely used in nature. Insects rely on light polarization for various purposes, such as water detection, improving contrast, breaking camouflage, navigation, and signaling during mating.

Muscular anatomy of the forelimb of Leopardus geoffroyi: Functional and phylogenetic aspects in Feliformia, part I. Proximal forelimb.

Anatomical knowledge is fundamental for all species. In particular, myology allows a deeper understanding of ecomorphology-especially for those species hard to observe in the wild-and may be an important source for phylogenetic information. In this study, we analyzed the myological variation of the musculature of the shoulder and arm of the forelimb in species of the suborder Feliformia and its relationship with the phylogenetic history and the locomotor behavior, habitat, and predatory habits of the species within this group, using Leopardus geoffroyi as a case study.

Under an adaptive hypothesis, the reciprocal influence between mutualistic plants and frugivores is expected to result in suites of matching frugivore and plant traits that structure fruit consumption. Recent work has suggested fruit traits can represent adaptations to broad groups of functionally similar frugivores, but the role of frugivore traits and within-species variation in structuring fruit consumption is less understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we assess the presence of reciprocal trait matching for the mutualistic ecological network comprising of bats that feed on and disperse seeds.
