A study was made of the effect of digoxin on the systemic hemodynamics and collateral circulation in acute occlusion of the dog left coronary artery. Digoxin (0.01 mg/kg) made the collateral blood inflow to the ischemic zone increase intensely and for a long time, raised the cardiac output due to an increase in the stroke volume, lowered the total peripheral vascular resistance in the presence of high heart contractility and work. The raising of the digoxin dose to 0.05 mg/kg was followed by diphasic changes in the coronary blood flow, a less marked increase in myocardial work and contractility, in the stroke and minute heart volumes.
