The inner ear of teleost fishes is known to serve both auditory and vestibular functions. Many studies have compared otoliths from different species and attempted to understand the observed differences within the light of environmental factors. However, experimental data on how otoliths could adapt are scarce.

Fetal cardiac function in pregnancy affected by congenital heart disease: protocol for a multicentre prospective cohort study.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

January 2025

Royal Hospital for Women and UNSW, School of Clinical Medicine, Level 0, Royal Hospital for Women, Barker Street (Locked Bag 2000), Sydney, NSW, 2031, Australia.

Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common fetal malformation, and it can result first in cardiac remodeling and dysfunction and later in cardiac failure and hydrops. A limited number of studies have evaluated cardiac function in fetuses affected by CHD. Functional parameters could potentially identify fetuses at risk of cardiac failure before its development.

Associations between morphometric similarity network and brain gene expression in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Neuroscience

January 2025

Department of Medical Imaging and Tianjin Key Laboratory of Functional Imaging, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin 300052, China. Electronic address:

Abnormal functional and structural connectivity of brain networks is commonly observed in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and accompanied bycognitive impairment. In this study, we revealed differences in brain structure in T2DM using a Morphometric Similarity Network (MSN) method, which quantifies structural similarities between brain regions. The associations between T2DM-associated changes in morphometric similarity (MS) and gene expression were analyzed to explore the molecular and cellular mechanism underlying MS changes in T2DM.

Energetic constraints drive the decline of a sentinel polar bear population.

Science

January 2025

Laboratory of Quantitative Global Change Ecology, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Toronto Scarborough, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Human-driven Arctic warming and resulting sea ice loss have been associated with declines in several polar bear populations. However, quantifying how individual responses to environmental change integrate and scale to influence population dynamics in polar bears has yet to be achieved. We developed an individual-based bioenergetic model and hindcast population dynamics across 42 years of observed sea ice conditions in Western Hudson Bay, a region undergoing rapid environmental change.

The breeding and exploitation of chickens at the backyard or commercial family level is an activity of great economic relevance for families in Ecuador. In addition to providing protein of high biological value for food security, it revalues local food resources that could provide productive benefits. With this objective, a study has been conducted in order to explore the effect of C.
