The determination of spectrum of blood plasma fatty acids was performed in patients with purulent surgical infection. The surgical infection was shown to bring about changes in the content of free fatty acids (FFA) in blood plasma. In patients with sepsis undulatory changes in the content of FFA of blood plasma were typical. Sharp and stable decrease of FFA content was observed in patients with critical development of sepsis and lethal outcome. The increased content of FFA was established in patients with septic shock.

Pre-pregnancy BMI modifies the associations between triglyceride-glucose index in early pregnancy and adverse perinatal outcomes: a 5-year cohort study of 67,936 women in China.

Diabetol Metab Syndr

January 2025

The International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, No. 910, Hengshan Rd., Shanghai, 200030, China.

Background: Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index was suggested as a possible surrogate for insulin resistance and a predictor for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in the non-pregnant population. However, the relationship between TyG index in early pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs), and the contribution of pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) was still illusive.

Methods: A large retrospective cohort study involving 67,936 pregnant Chinese women between 2017 and 2022 was conducted.

Depressive symptoms in older adults are associated with changes in stress-related markers, functional connectivity and brain volume.

Background: Subclinical depressive symptoms increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). The neurobiological mechanisms underlying this link may involve stress system dysfunction, notably related to the hippocampus which is particularly sensitive to AD. We aimed to investigate the links between blood stress markers and changes in brain regions involved in the stress response in older adults with or without subclinical depressive symptoms.

Background: Changes in amyloid beta (Aβ) and phosphorylated tau brain levels are known to affect brain network organization but very little is known about how plasma markers can relate to these measures. We aimed to address the relationship between centrality network changes and two plasma pathology markers: phosphorylated tau at threonine 231 (p-tau231), a proxy for early Aβ change, and neurofilament light chain (Nfl), a marker of axonal degeneration.

Methods: One hundred and four cognitively unimpaired individuals were divided into a high pathology load (33 individuals; HP) group and a low pathology (71 individuals; LP) one.

Evaluation of glomerular filtration rate estimation through plasma clearance of iohexol in seagulls (Larus michahellis).

BMC Vet Res

January 2025

Department of Veterinary Sciences, Veterinary Teaching Hospital "Mario Modenato", University of Pisa, via Livornese snc, San Piero a Grado, Pisa, Italy.

Background: Current endogenous indicators utilised in avian medicine are not sensitive enough to detect renal disease in its early stages. Alternative markers ought to be examined as a result. The aim is to investigate the accuracy of limited-sampling models for glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in adult seagulls using plasma clearance of iohexol (IOX).

Introduction: Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers account for over a quarter of all cancer-related deaths in the United States; however, the latest trends in their prevalence remain unclear.

Methods: Data on GI cancers were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) were estimated across various states, sexes, ages, and risk factors, and annual percentage changes were calculated.
