Follow-up observations during the period from 1 to 5 years were performed in 12 of 18 patients subjected to bilateral resections of lungs for chronic pulmonary suppurations. Different forms of lung hypertension were revealed in 9 out of the 12 patients. The function of external ventilation was found to be disturbed in a considerable degree.

Background: Cognitive dysfunction emerges as a manifestation of reduced estrogen levels following ovariectomy in an individual. However, the conventional use of estrogen replacement therapy could increase the risk of breast cancer and thromboembolism. Icariin is a natural compound that has been reported to be a neuroprotective agent against dementia.

Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive emerging tool to modulate brain activities and functional connectivity in various neuropsychiatric disorders. rTMS combined with cognitive training (rTMS-COG) has been showing cognitive enhancing effects compared to those of placebo in mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) in some previous studies. However, there is not much research to conclude how much each rTMS or COG contributes to therapeutic cognitive effects.

Background: Social health factors have been robustly associated with better cognitive health in older adults; however, less is known about how social network size affects the relationship between in-vivo biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and brain aging outcomes. We examined the independent and interactive relationships between plasma pTau181 and social network size on memory function and medial temporal lobe (MTL) volume in older adults.

Method: Participants were 58 community-dwelling older adults (mean age = 75.

Alzheimers Dement

University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, Lexington, KY, USA.

Background: We currently lack in the dementia field accurate, noninvasive, quick, and affordable screening tools for brain dysfunctions associated with early subtle risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Our Kentucky aging cohort demonstrates that asymptomatic older individuals with MCI-like frontal memory-related brainwave patterns convert to MCI within a short 5-year period, as opposed to individuals with NC-like patterns (1) that remain normal 10 years later (2). Astrocyte reactivity influences amyloid-ß effects on tau pathology in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (3).

Research Program on Cognition and Neuromodulation-Based Interventions, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

Background: The computerized NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTB-CB) was designed to assess cognitive functioning across the lifespan. Previous studies demonstrated that NIHTB-CB measures discriminate between healthy controls (HCs), individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and individuals with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). Scores on NIHTB-CB tasks also correspond with performance on well-validated neuropsychological measures of the same cognitive domains.
