We present a new database, EutherianCoP, of fossil mammals which lived globally from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene. The database includes 13,972 fossil occurrences of 786 extant or recently extinct placental mammal species, plus 155,198 current occurrences for those of them which survived to the present. The occurrences are correlated with radiometric age information.

The largest negative carbon-isotope excursion in geological history has been reported by several studies of the upper Doushantuo Formation of South China, which has been correlated to the middle Ediacaran-Shuram excursion (SE). Due to a scarcity of radiometric age constraints on the excursion in South China, however, global correlations and comparisons of this event remain a debate. Here, we present Re-Os and carbon isotope data on organic-rich sediments obtained from a drill-core sample in the Chengkou area, the northeastern margin of the Yangtze Platform, and South China.

Camouflage is often considered a daytime phenomenon based on light and shade. Nocturnal camouflage can also occur, but its mechanistic basis remains unclear. Here, we analyze the conditions for background matching (BM) of avian predators against the night sky.

Human population dynamics and their drivers are not well understood, especially over the long term and on large scales. Here, we estimate demographic growth trajectories from 9 to 3 ka BP across the entire globe by employing summed probability distributions of radiocarbon dates. Our reconstruction reveals multicentennial growth cycles on all six inhabited continents, which exhibited matching dominant frequencies and phase relations.

Purpose: To quantitatively investigate the chemical origins of near-UV excited fluorescence in the crystalline lens, and demonstrate the potential usefulness of a rapid and noninvasive diagnostic approach for screening and monitoring of lens damage.
Methods: Anterior segment UV fluorescence imaging was applied to a population of 30 healthy adults, ages 18 to 64 years. Absolute fluorescence intensities and intensity ratios were compared across the population as a function of age.
