Genetic variants play a crucial role in shaping the adaptive phenotypes associated with high-altitude populations. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of the specific impacts of different environments associated with increasing altitudes on the natural selection of these genetic variants remains undetermined. Hence, this study aimed to identify genetic markers responsible for high-altitude adaptation with specific reference to different altitudes, majorly focussing on an altitude elevation range of ∼1500 m and a corresponding decrease of ≥5 % in ambient oxygen availability.

In the article by Escudero et al (2006), there are only random samples, which are useful for the validity of the study design. In this author's opinion, there are still other clinicophysiological characteristics that merit consideration and scrutiny as discussed below. The hypothesis set by the original authors needs to be adequately justified.

Characteristic modifications of the peripheral airways in patients with bronchial asthma in areas with air pollution.

Objective: Changes in the peripheral airways in patients with bronchial asthma who were living in the Kawasaki industrial zone, region with severe air pollution, were morphologically investigated in order to determine the pathological conditions of such bronchial asthma, in particular ascertaining the effect of air pollution.

Methodology: Studies were made of the morphological characteristics of the peripheral airways in patients with bronchial asthma who had resided for long periods in an area near Tokyo affected by air pollution.

Results: The endoscopic findings of the peripheral airways were distinct, consisting of reddening, stenosis, pigmentation, pallor, lustrelessness and hypersecretion.

Bronchial asthma is an airway disorder associated with bronchial hyperresponsiveness, variable airflow obstruction and elevated levels of nitric oxide (NO) in exhaled air. The variables all reflect, in part, the underlying airway inflammation in this disease. To understand their interrelationships we have investigated the relationship between exhaled NO levels and clinicophysiological markers of asthma severity.
