Background: Alcohol intake is associated with a higher risk of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer (BC), presumably through its confirmed ability to increase sex hormone levels. Whether consuming alcohol within the recommended limit of one serving per day increases sex hormone levels among postmenopausal women taking aromatase inhibitors (AI) to inhibit estrogen production remains unknown. Therefore, we compared sex hormone levels following white wine to levels following white grape juice among ER + BC survivors taking AIs.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, USA.

The ability to define neurodegenerative diseases of aging based of biology rather than clinically defined syndromic presentations follows from biomarker development and reflects underlying pathology in living people. The NIA-AA Research Framework (Jack et al 2018 Alzheimers Dement) proposed the biological definition for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and sought to provide a common language to identify and stage research participants, who were not cognitively impaired but had abnormal AD biomarkers; it has been revised. The biological classification of Huntington's disease (Tabrizi et al 2022 Lancet Neurology) included a biological research definition with an integrated staging system, centered on biological, clinical, and functional assessments.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, Miami, FL, USA.

Background: Receiving sufficient assistance with ADLs/IADLs can support dementia patients' physical and psychosocial health, as well as aging in place. The Department of Veterans Affairs has prioritized supporting Veterans in aging at place a home when this is their preference. We aimed in the current study to analyze if there are demographic characteristics and/or comorbidities of Veterans with dementia that are predictive of having unmet ADL/IADL needs.

Background: Cardiometabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia or obesity, constitute major causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, especially among middle-aged individuals. The increasing incidence and association with aging and lifestyle, render the cardiometabolic diseases a societal concern. This is further reinforced by their association with an increased risk of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases (namely dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD)).

Background: The overuse of antipsychotics in persons with dementia in long-term care (LTC) has been a source of clinical concern, public attention, and policy intervention for over 30 years. Targeted quality improvement, broader awareness of risks, and other initiatives have resulted in substantial reductions in antipsychotic use in LTC settings in North America and elsewhere. Limited evidence suggests that reductions in antipsychotic use may be resulting in unintended consequences, such as substitution with alternate, but similarly harmful, psychotropic medications.
