Virions of polyvalent staphylococcal bacteriophage SB-I have an octaedric head (800 X 700 A) and a long contractive process (1800 X 150 A). The phage particle with a molecular weight of 150 X 10(6) daltons contains 48% double-stranded RNA and 52% protein. The proteinic component of the phage consists of 18 heterogeneic polypeptide chains.

Background: Phage therapy offers a promising alternative for treating serious infections, including diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), through the lytic action of phages. This randomized double-blind study was conducted to evaluate the safety and tolerability of the TP-102 bacteriophage cocktail in patients with DFUs non-infected and infected with Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and/or Acinetobacter baumannii.
Methods: Nineteen participants with DFUs were randomized after susceptibility testing.

Phage therapy uses viruses (phages) against antibiotic resistance. Tailoring treatments to specific patient strains requires stocks of various highly concentrated purified phages. It, therefore, faces challenges: titration duration and specificity to a phage/bacteria couple; purification affecting stability; and highly concentrated suspensions tending to aggregate.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become an increasingly severe threat to global health, and AMR-associated infection is one of the leading causes of death around the world. Due to the long turnaround time and the limited flexibility and availability of current antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods, a large portion of patients with bacterial infections are still treated empirically, increasing the risk of mistreatment. To address the demand for precision treatment of bacterial infections, we developed a nano-dilution SlipChip (nd-SlipChip)-based systematic evaluation method, which facilitates rapid, logic feedback for the assessment of antibiotics, antibiotic combinations, and phage therapy.

The treatment of infections caused by is currently complicated by the increasing number of strains resistant to antimicrobial agents. One promising way to solve this problem is phage therapy. Due to the lack of data on the effectiveness and safety of phage preparations, STAFAL is the only registered phage preparation for the treatment of infectious diseases in the Slovak Republic and the entire European Union.
