A series of experiments was undertaken in a total of 95 adult subjects, of whom 25 had coronary artery disease, to evaluate the extrapolation (Defares) CO2 rebreathing method vs. the equilibrium (Collier) method for estimating mixed venous CO2 tension. Collier values were corrected for the downstream effect, whereas Defares values were uncorrected. Although the methods gave similar mean values in separate series with normal subjects walking on a treadmill set at 123 W for 3 min, Collier values had a coefficient of variation (CV) of 2.5% in duplicate determinations and Defares values had a CV of 4.5%. In paired comparisons Defares values averaged either higher or lower than Collier values depending on variations in technique and the analysis of Defares tracings. Collier values were essentially unaffected by the duration of the rebreathing period (10 vs. 15 s). The Collier technique appears to be superior for the exercise evaluation of cardiac output in healthy and diseased subjects when the goal is obtain values at 82 or 123 W in single test sessions.

Background: Point-of-care tests (POCT) can support diagnosis of patients with community acquired acute respiratory tract infections (CA-RTI) in primary care and thereby reduce uncertainty whether antibiotics may benefit patients. However, successful roll out of POCTs need to be built on a deep understanding of patients' perspectives on the place of POCTs in patient centred care.
Aim: To explore patients' perceptions of the value of POCTs during consultations for CA-RTI.

Unlabelled: Intertwined within a patchwork of different types of land use and land cover, novel ecosystems are urban ecosystems that have no historical analogues and contain novel species assemblages. Some researchers and practitioners in the field of conservation and restoration regard urban novel ecosystems unworthy of concern, while other groups call for their preservation due to the rate of biodiversity loss in cities and limited access to nature among some social groups. However, very little is known about how people perceive novel ecosystems (such as informal green spaces, post-industrial or derelict land sites awaiting redevelopment, brownfield sites, vacant lots, interstitial or gap spaces) which are often characterised by assemblages of wild, spontaneous, and overgrown vegetation, but also remanent or derelict urban infrastructure in cities.

Understanding the genetic basis of routinely-acquired blood tests can provide insights into several aspects of human physiology. We report a genome-wide association study of 42 quantitative blood test traits defined using Electronic Healthcare Records (EHRs) of ~50,000 British Bangladeshi and British Pakistani adults. We demonstrate a causal variant within the PIEZO1 locus which was associated with alterations in red cell traits and glycated haemoglobin.
