The Ca2+ pump of the plasma membrane of human red blood cells is associated with the activity of a (Ca2+ + Mg2+)-ATPase. Both the ATPase and the pump are stimulated above basal activities by calmodulin, an ubiquitous Ca2+-binding protein. Calmodulin isolated from human red blood cells was shown to be equipotent and equieffective with that isolated from beef brain. Half-maximal activation of ATPase (isolated red blood cell membranes, 37 C) and transport (inside-out red blood cell membrane vesicles, 25 C) were obtained with 2.5 and 4.4 nM calmodulin, respectively. Ca2+ dependence of Ca2+ transport was measured in the absence and in the presence of 50 nM calmodulin. At all Ca2+ concentrations above 2 X 10(-7) M Ca2+, the rate of transport was greater in the presence of calmodulin. The results implicate calmodulin in the regulation of the plasma membrane Ca2+ pump, but the mechanism(s) remain to be elucidated.

Estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is highly significant, and many estimation methods have been developed. However, as no estimation method is determinate, several methods must be combined to achieve an accurate estimation. Therefore, the more methods available, the more accurate the estimation.

About one-fifth of people in industrialised countries are tattooed, potentially putting them at risk of exposure to possible carcinogenic or otherwise harmful substances. This study aims to determine the exposure to soluble tattoo ink ingredients and their excretion within 24 h after tattooing. In this clinical study, 24 subjects were tattooed with black or red tattoo ink to which the 3 tracer substances, potassium iodide, 4-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and 2-phenoxyethanol (PEtOH), had been added to mimic known substances found in tattoo inks.

The aberrant function of lymphocytes is considered a significant contributing factor to pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), but the precise mechanism by which T lymphocytes induce erythroid development stagnation remains unclear. In our study, the CD8 T lymphocytes were isolated from bone marrow aspirates of acquired PRCA patients and healthy controls. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed to analyze gene expression profiles.

Objective: To investigate the prognostic value of maternal angiogenic factors in late-onset small fetuses, alone or in combination with the ultrasound and Doppler parameters currently used for the classification of low-risk small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses or high-risk fetal growth restriction (FGR), overall and according to the presence or absence of pre-eclampsia.
Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of women with a singleton pregnancy with a diagnosis of late-onset fetal smallness (defined as birth weight < 10 centile) and a gestational age of ≥ 34 weeks at delivery. Ultrasound assessment of estimated fetal weight (EFW) and Doppler assessment of uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI) and cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) were performed every 1-2 weeks.
