Background: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a marine bacterium causing seafood-associated gastrointestinal illness in humans and acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) in shrimp. Bacteriophages have emerged as promising biocontrol agents against V. parahaemolyticus.

The rapid development and worldwide distribution of COVID-19 vaccines is a remarkable achievement of biomedical research and logistical implementation. However, these developments are associated with the risk of a surge of substandard and falsified (SF) vaccines, as illustrated by the 184 incidents with SF and diverted COVID-19 vaccines which have been reported during the pandemic in 48 countries, with a paucity of methods for their detection in supply chains. In this context, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-ToF) mass spectrometry (MS) is globally available for fast and accurate analysis of bacteria in patient samples, offering a potentially accessible solution to identify SF vaccines.

Self-rerouting sensor network for electronic skin resilient to severe damage.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Toyota Central R&D Labs. Inc.; 41-1, Yokomichi, Nagakute, Aichi, Japan.

We propose a network architecture for electronic skin with an extensive sensor array-crucial for enabling robots to perceive their environment and interact effectively with humans. Fault tolerance is essential for electronic skins on robot exteriors. Although self-healing electronic skins targeting minor damages are studied using material-based approaches, substantial damages such as severe cuts necessitate re-establishing communication pathways, traditionally performed with high-functionality microprocessor sensor nodes.

Inhibition of the target of rapamycin (TOR/mTOR) protein kinase by the drug rapamycin extends lifespan and health span across diverse species. However, rapamycin has potential off-target and side effects that warrant the discovery of additional TOR inhibitors. TOR was initially discovered in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) which contains two TOR paralogs, TOR1 and TOR2.

Rapid acclimatization to baseline stimulation with a multi-canal vestibulocochlear implant.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

January 2025

Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Division of Balance Disorders, School for Mental Health and Neuroscience (MHENS), Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Purpose: It is hypothesized that a vestibular implant should re-establish baseline activity of the ampullary nerves. Use of a constant baseline stimulation potentially allows encoding of bi-directional head movements, through the addition of signal modulations. Effective stimulation of the vestibular nerves depends on the ability to acclimate to this baseline signal.
