Background And Aim: Oxidative stress has been considered a factor in the development of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis (PEP). The present clinical trial evaluated whether adding intravenous mesna to rectal indomethacin could prevent or alleviate PEP.

Methods: An open-labeled clinical trial was done on 698 participants undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Urotoxicity of Cyclophosphamide: A Comparison Across Neoplastic, Autoimmune, and Transplant Indications.

Cureus

December 2024

Internal Medicine/Nephrology, Riverside Health System, Yonkers, USA.

We conducted a large-scale disproportionality analysis of the urotoxicity of cyclophosphamide (CYC) and the related drug ifosfamide (IFO) using the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, with data ranging from Q4 2012 to Q2 2024. We compared the reporting odds ratio (ROR) of various urotoxicity manifestations of CYC and IFO across patient populations being treated for antineoplastic, immunosuppressive, and transplantation indications. When a wide range of urotoxicity manifestations was aggregated, we found that transplant patients had an increased relative susceptibility to CYC urotoxicity.

Incidence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of BK Hemorrhagic Cystitis in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation From HLA-Matched and Haploidentical Donors With Post-Transplant Cyclophosphamide.

Transplant Cell Ther

Hematology Department, Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe, València, Spain; Hematology Research Group, Institut d'Investigació Sanitària La Fe, València, Spain; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Cáncer (CIBERONC), Instituto Carlos III, Madrid, Spain; Medicine Department, Universitat de València, València, Spain.

BK hemorrhagic cystitis (BK-HC) is a common complication following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), particularly when posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) is used as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. However, comparative studies of BK-HC incidence in matched sibling donors (MSD) and unrelated donors (MUD) often include small haploidentical (HAPLO) donor cohorts and usually lack detailed information on disease evolution, coinfections, management and impact on outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes in patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing HSCT from MSD, MUD, HAPLO donors using PTCy as GVHD prophylaxis.

Antibiofilm Effects of Novel Compounds in Otitis Media Treatment: Systematic Review.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Dr Subotica 1, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia.

Otitis media (OM) is a frequent disease with incidence rate of 5300 cases per 100,000 people. Recent studies showed that polymicrobial biofilm formation represents a significant pathogenic mechanism in recurrent and chronic forms of OM. Biofilm enables bacteria to resist antibiotics that would typically be recommended in guidelines, contributing to the ineffectiveness of current antimicrobial strategies.

We present a case of a 36-year-old male found to have a nonseminomatous germ cell tumor (NSGCT) with alpha-fetoprotein levels (AFP) of 737.9 ng/mL and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG) of 692 IU/mL. Pathology analysis after left orchiectomy showed a mixed germ cell tumor with 20% embryonal carcinoma, 20% yolk sac tumor, and 60% teratoma.
