Electron microscopical examination of the new virulent bacteriophage phi KZ, specific for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, has revealed an unusual structure in its capsid. In the center of the phage head is a cylinder of low electron density ("inner body"), surrounded by fibrous material which is packed around the inner body in a spoollike manner. The inner body itself has a springlike appearance. These structures disappear after adsorption of phage particles to bacteria. Various morphological forms, which can be interpreted as intermediate steps in phi KZ DNA condensation, have been seen in ultrathin sections of phi KZ-infected cells.

This Research Note explores the creation of a digitally animated doublet, based on an archival and material reconstruction of a seventeenth-century Florentine doublet, as a new research methodology for textile scholars. Using Clo3D software to show how 2D pattern pieces are cut and assembled into a highly complex sculptural garment, the animation reveals the artful achievements of early modern tailors and how early modern clothes interact on the body. We examine the possibilities and challenges of digital reconstruction, explaining how we overcame software limitations to create a historically informed animation that renders complex fabrics, patterns, inner layers, and construction processes visible.

The ability to finely tune the nuclearity of active metal sites is critical for designing highly selective catalysts, especially for hydrogenation processes. In this work, we developed a novel PdCu catalyst with an ordered body-centered cubic (BCC) structure, enabling precise control over Pd nuclearity to optimize selectivity. Using a facile polyol synthesis method, we modulated the Pd coordination environment, reducing the Pd-Pd coordination number from 3 (disordered face-centered cubic, FCC) to 0 (ordered BCC), thereby achieving full isolation of Pd by the surrounding Cu atoms.
