A 35-year-old female with rheumatoid arthritis developed an ischaemic colitis and circulating immune complexes following her fourth injection of sodium aurothiomalate. The immune-complex titres fell rapidly after resolution of the colitis, and a possible association of these immune complexes and the bowel pathology is suggested.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a threat to global society. Delta and Omicron are concerning variants due to the risk of increasing human-to-human transmissibility and immune evasion. This study aims to evaluate the binding ability of these variants toward the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor and antibodies using a computational approach.

Novel Ru(II) Complexes as Type-I/-II Photosensitizers for Multimodal Hypoxia-Tolerant Chemo-Photodynamic/Immune Therapy.

Mol Pharm

January 2025

School of Pharmacy, Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory for Inflammation and Molecular Drug Target, Nantong University, Nantong 226001, Jiangsu Province, China.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is increasingly regarded as an attractive approach for cancer treatment due to its advantages of low invasiveness, minimal side effects, and high efficiency. Here, two novel Ru(II) complexes , were designed and synthesized by coordinating phenanthroline and biquinoline ligands with Ru(II) center, and their chemo-photodynamic therapy and immunotherapy were explored. Both and exhibited significant phototoxicity against A549 and 4T1 tumor cells type-I/-II PDT.

Chemistry of Natural and Microbial Products Department, Pharmaceutical and Drug Industries Research Institute, National Research Centre, 33 El Buhouth St, Dokki-Giza, Egypt.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant mortality and morbidity for millions of people. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus is capable of causing severe and fatal diseases. We evaluated the antiviral properties of Aspergillus tamarii SP73-EGY isolate extract against low pathogenic coronavirus (229E), Adeno-7- and Herpes-2 viruses.

HLA-E: Immune Receptor Functional Mechanisms Revealed by Structural Studies.

Immunol Rev

January 2025

Nuffield Department of Medicine, Center for Immuno-Oncology, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

HLA-E is a nonclassical, nonpolymorphic, class Ib HLA molecule. Its primary function is to present a conserved nonamer peptide, termed VL9, derived from the signal sequence of classical MHC molecules to the NKG2x-CD94 receptors on NK cells and a subset of T lymphocytes. These receptors regulate the function of NK cells, and the importance of this role, which is conserved across mammalian species, probably accounts for the lack of genetic polymorphism.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacteria have various DNA repair mechanisms to keep their genomes intact, but identifying these proteins is tricky due to their similarities.
  • A new search strategy helps identify and analyze DNA repair proteins, particularly those involved in RecA-dependent homologous recombination, revealing common proteins like RecA and SSB across many species.
  • The study finds that some DNA repair proteins are often found alongside immune system components, suggesting a potential link, but no immune system is entirely dependent on a single DNA repair protein, indicating a complex relationship between these systems in bacteria.
