It is reported on the methodology of nuclear-medical investigations of the iron metabolism with the help of a whole body counter. At first the construction of the whole body counter is briefly explained. The whole body counter installed in the nuclear-medical clinic of the St adtisches Klinikum Berlin- Buch consists of two NaJ (Tl)-crystal detectors which are arranged in a steel screening chamber above and below a patient's couch. By measurement of the total body retention of 59Fe by means of the whole body counter the intestinal iron absorption can simply and easily be determined under physiological conditions. The total body measuring technique furthermore allows the recognition of the dynamic total body distribution of 59Fe by recording of longitudinal profiles of the body. Furthermore it is reported on the measuring method for the quantitative determination of blood losses by means of the whole body counter. Finally the author briefly deals with the radiation exposure of the patient in the investigations with 59Fe at the whole body counter.

Previous research has consistently shown that high-fat diet (HFD) consumption can lead to the development of colonic inflammation. Neohesperidin (NHP), a naturally occurring flavanone glycoside in citrus fruits, has anti-inflammatory properties. However, the efficacy and mechanism of NHP in countering prolonged HFD-induced inflammation remains unclear.

: Whole body vibration (WBV) is a valuable tool to mitigate physiological adaptations related to age and inactivity. Although significant benefits have been found at the musculoskeletal level, including increased bone mass and reduced muscle atrophy, the underlying biological mechanisms remain largely unknown. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate the effects of vibratory training on bone tissue in murine models of different age groups by investigating the structural and distribution changes in some crucial biomarkers involved in musculoskeletal homeostasis.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition influenced by diet, which affects gut microbiota and immune functions. The rising prevalence of IBD, linked to Western diets in developing countries, highlights the need for dietary interventions. This study aimed to assess the impact of white kidney beans (WKB) on gut inflammation and microbiota changes, focusing on their effects on enteric glial cells (EGCs) and immune activity in colitis.

The accurate assessment of body composition in cirrhosis is challenging as fluid accumulation affects most techniques. The whole-body counter is a state-of-the-art method that measures total body potassium (TBK) unbiased by fluid, from which body cell mass (BCM) is derived. This pilot study in 20 patients with cirrhosis evaluated bedside tools including the liver frailty index (LFI), bioimpedance analysis-based phase angle, calf circumference (CC), and BMI (body mass index)/edema-adjusted CC, and explored their association with TBK and BCM.

Climate change has caused heat stress (HS) to become an increasingly severe problem for high-producing dairy herds. Although cooling systems allow milk production to remain nearly constant throughout the year, fertility decreases during summer. Physiological counter-current heat transfer mechanisms maintaining brain/hypothalamic and reproductive functions in cattle are vulnerable to HS.
