Background/objectives: Water-soluble vitamins, comprising the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C, are essential for normal growth, cellular metabolism, and immune function in pediatric populations. Due to limited storage in the body, these vitamins require consistent intake to prevent deficiencies. Pediatric populations, particularly infants and young children, face a heightened risk of both deficiency and, in rare cases, toxicity due to varying dietary intake and increased developmental needs.

Background: Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining bone health with numerous benefits for extraskeletal health as well.

Objectives: We aimed to assess the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in children (0-18 years old) in a tertiary hospital in Romania between August 2019 and January 2024 and to investigate the role of adequate supplementation in this vulnerable population.

Methods: The serum 25(OH)D levels were measured using a chemiluminescence binding assay.

With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the absence of established evidence-based treatment protocols led healthcare professionals and the public to explore experimental treatments, including high doses of vitamin D supplements. This study aimed to assess changes in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels during the pandemic, employing a retrospective cohort analysis of data from Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC). The study analyzed serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in a cohort of 35,556 patients treated at CAMC in 2019, a representative pre-pandemic period, to 2021, a representative pandemic period.

Vitamin B12 status in hospitalised cancer patients: Prevalence and clinical implications of depletion and hypervitaminosis.

Clin Nutr ESPEN

October 2024

Department of Internal Medicine and Medical Therapeutics, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy; First Department of Internal Medicine, IRCCS San Matteo Hospital Foundation, Pavia, Italy. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin B12 status is often altered in cancer patients, with significant instances of both deficiency and excess observed in a study of 788 hospitalized individuals.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency was found in 33.5% of patients, while 17.1% had elevated levels; factors such as cancer stage, type, and overall health status influenced these levels.
  • The study concluded that vitamin B12 depletion is prevalent in early-stage cancer patients and older individuals, while elevated levels are linked to poorer clinical conditions.

Mechanistic perspective on the actions of vitamin a in autism spectrum disorder etiology.

Neurodevelopmental Biology Unit, Biomedical Sciences Research Laboratory, Basic Sciences Department, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción, Concepción, Chile. Electronic address:

Vitamin A (VA) has many functions in the body, some of which are key for the development and functioning of the nervous system, while some others might indirectly influence neural function. Both hypovitaminosis and hypervitaminosis A can lead to clinical manifestations of concern for individuals and for general global health. Scientific evidence on the link between VA and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is growing, with some clinical studies and accumulating results obtained from basic research using cellular and animal models.
