: The aim of this study is to present our experience in the surgical treatment of calcified thoracic herniated disc disease via a transthoracic approach in the lateral position with the use of intraoperative computed tomography (iCT) and augmented reality (AR). All patients who underwent surgery for calcified thoracic herniated disc via a transthoracic transpleural approach at our Department using iCT and microscope-based AR were included in the study. : Six consecutive patients (five female, median age 53.

"Dumbbell" tumors are described as benign neoplasms presenting both intraspinal and extraspinal extensions, connected through the intervertebral foramen (McCormick, 1996) [1]. About 90 % of such tumors are histologically classified as schwannomas that most frequently arise in the thoracic region (Takamura and et al., 1997) [2].

Article Synopsis
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a common procedure for treating large kidney stones, traditionally using contrast for imaging, which has limitations in differentiating certain kidney structures.
  • An interim analysis of 122 patients compared the use of contrast versus air for imaging during PCNL, finding that air provided lower radiation exposure, quicker access times, and higher success rates in puncture attempts.
  • The study concluded that air pyelograms are a safe and effective alternative to contrast pyelograms, and combining both methods can be beneficial in challenging cases.

Early Management of Esophageal Leak in Esophageal Atresia: Changing Paradigms.

J Laparoendosc Adv Surg Tech A

August 2020

Clínica Las Condes, Las Condes, Chile.

A leak at the esophageal anastomosis can occur in 10%-20% of cases of esophageal atresia (EA). Thoracoscopic repair is trans-pleural, with the potential development of an empyema. Standard treatment of an anastomotic leak in a stable patient is often nonoperative, which can lead to prolonged parenteral nutrition and hospitalization.

Structural heteropolysaccharides as air-tight sealants of the human pleura.

J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater

April 2019

Laboratory of Adaptive and Regenerative Biology, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.

Pulmonary "air leaks," typically the result of pleural injury caused by lung surgery or chest trauma, result in the accumulation of air in the pleural space (pneumothorax). Air leaks are a major source of morbidity and prolonged hospitalization after pulmonary surgery. Previous work has demonstrated structural heteropolysaccharide (pectin) binding to the mouse pleural glycocalyx.
