The authors present a retrospective analysis of the results of the cytological examinations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples and tumor-cyst aspirates deriving from 262 patients treated for malignant intracranial primary and secondary tumors, and vertebral and peridural metastastic processes. Positive preoperative CSF samples were found in 15.3% of all cases of primary cerebral malignancies (13.9% of all gliomas) and positive postoperative CSF samples were found in 40% (91% of the medulloblastoma cases). In all cases of single or multiple secondary cerebral tumors, positive preoperative CSF samples were found in 20%.

Defining the CSF cytokine/chemokine and injury biomarker signature of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) autoimmunity can inform immunopathogenesis. CSF GFAP-IgG-positive samples (N = 98) were tested for 17 cytokines/chemokines, neurofilament light chain (NfL), and GFAP (ELLA, Bio-Techne). Controls included non-inflammatory (N = 42), AQP4-IgG-positive (N = 83), CNS infections (N = 13), and neurosarcoidosis (N = 32).

Cryopreservation is a widely used technique to preserve biological samples for extended periods of time at low temperatures. Even though it is known to have significant effects on cell viability, its effect on their metabolism remains unexplored. Studying how cryopreservation influences the metabolism of cells is important to guarantee the reliability of samples transported between sites for analysis.

Background: The diagnostic and prognostic values of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL), in comparison to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurofilament light chain (cNfL), and other clinical parameters in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the time of diagnosis remain elusive.

Methods: We examine paired serum and CSF samples from 80 ALS patients and 21 control subjects, all obtained at the time of diagnosis. Additional serum samples were collected from 51 other ALS patients.

Background: Skin melanoma is a highly metastatic cancer with an increasing global incidence. Despite advancements in immunotherapy, new treatment strategies based on tumor biology are essential for improving outcomes and developing novel therapies. Autophagy plays a critical role in melanoma cell metabolism and affects the tumor microenvironment (TME).
