Calcium ions (10 microM) enhance the permeability of the hepatic inner mitochondrial membrane to acetyl-CoA (and CoA). This effect is suppressed by the absence of phosphate ions or by the presence of EGTA, La3+, or ruthenium red. Exposure of mitochondria to Ca2+ for short intervals of time (e.g., 10 min) results in a reversible permeability change with release of acetyl-CoA and retention of sensitivity to EGTA. It is suggested that conditions resulting in an increase of the calcium ion concentration in the cytoplasm may thereby increase the rate of transfer of acetyl-CoA from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm.

CD163, a macrophage-specific receptor, plays a critical role in scavenging hemoglobin released during hemolysis, protecting against oxidative effects of heme iron. In the bloodstream, hemoglobin is bound by haptoglobin, leading to its immediate endocytosis by CD163. While haptoglobin's structure and function are well understood, CD163's structure and its interaction with the haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex have remained elusive.

The gut-brain axis mediates bidirectional signaling between the intestine and the nervous system and is critical for organism-wide homeostasis. Here, we report the identification of a peptidergic endocrine circuit in which bidirectional signaling between neurons and the intestine potentiates the activation of the antioxidant response in in the intestine. We identify an FMRF-amide-like peptide, FLP-2, whose release from the intestine is necessary and sufficient to activate the intestinal oxidative stress response by promoting the release of the antioxidant FLP-1 neuropeptide from neurons.

Mechano-induced keratinocyte hyperproliferation is reported to be associated with various skin diseases. Enhanced cell proliferation often requires the active metabolism of nutrients to produce energy. However, how keratinocytes adapt their cellular metabolism homeostasis to mechanical cues remains unclear.

The characteristics and performance of chitosan-based colon delivery systems are significantly influenced by the method of preparation. Insect chitosan-melanin complex (CMC) may offer superior attributes over traditional shrimp and crab chitosan (CS) for colon-targeted administration. This study used dung beetle CMC as the carrier matrix and comprehensively examined the impact of various crosslinking techniques on the colonic drug delivery efficacy of microspheres, encompassing drug loading, swelling, drug release behavior, adhesion, enzymatic degradation, and absorption enhancement.

In tomato, sugar content is highly correlated with consumer preferences, with most consumers preferring sweeter fruit. However, the sugar content of commercial varieties is generally low, as it is inversely correlated with fruit size, and growers prioritize yield over flavour quality. Here we identified two genes, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) calcium-dependent protein kinase 27 (SlCDPK27; also known as SlCPK27) and its paralogue SlCDPK26, that control fruit sugar content.
