Unlabelled: Heavy metals exist in the ecosystem both naturally and due to anthropogenic activities and as recalcitrant pollutants; they are non-biodegradable and cause acute and chronic diseases to human beings and many lifeforms. A statistical experimental approach was applied in this current study to optimize the detoxification of mercury [Hg(II)] from mono-component biosorption system by a novel hybrid granular activated carbon (biosorbent) prepared from maize plant residues. The analysis of variance by the application of central composite design shows that all the studied independent factors greatly influence Hg(II) removal efficiency and uptake capacity.

Abnormally elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are considered one of the characteristics of tumors and have been extensively employed in the construction of tumor-activated prodrugs. However, ideal ROS-activated molecular triggers that possess high sensitivity and easy functionalization for tailoring specific prodrugs, remain scarce. In this work, we developed a highly reactive oxygen species (hROS, such as •OH, ONOO and HOCl)-responsive molecular trigger (namely FDROS-4) through the conjunction of methylene blue (MB) and 2, 6-bis (hydroxymethyl) aniline via urea bond, integrating imaging and therapeutic functions.

Background: Patients with type 2 DM (T2DM) and established cardiovascular disease (CVD) are at high risk of recurrent CV events. We analysed the use of the CNIC-polypill (acetylsalicylic acid, ramipril, and atorvastatin) compared with other therapeutic strategies in patients with T2DM and CVD from the retrospective NEPTUNO study.
Methods: Patients were stratified into four therapeutic approaches: CNIC-polypill, its monocomponents as loose medications, equipotent medications, and other therapies.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a prevalent perioperative complication among elderly individuals and is a cause of significant detrimental consequences for both individuals and society. Pharmacological and nonpharmacological prevention methods/therapies have been proposed to mitigate the risk of POD. Nevertheless, the efficacy of pharmacological interventions is controversial, and some of them cause side effects.
