Functional nanocrystal as effective contrast agents for dual-mode imaging: Live-cell sonoluminescence and contrast-enhanced echography.

Ultrason Sonochem

January 2025

Department of Applied Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino, Corso Duca degli Abruzzi 24, 10129 Turin, Italy; Polito(BIO)Med Lab, Politecnico di Torino, 10129 Turin, Italy. Electronic address:

In the context of molecular imaging, the present work explores an innovative platform made of lipid-coated nanocrystals as contrast-enhanced agent for both ultrasound imaging and sonoluminescence. At first, the dynamics of gas bubbles generation and cavitation under insonation with either pristine or lipid-coated nanocrystals (ZnO-Lip) are described, and the differences between the two colloidal systems are highlighted. These ZnO-Lip show an unprecedented ability to assist cavitation, which is reflected in enhanced sonoluminescent light emission with respect to the pristine nanocrystals or the pure water.

Triglyceride-glucose index: carotid intima-media thickness and cardiovascular risk in a European population.

Cardiovasc Diabetol

January 2025

Centro E. Grossi Paoletti, Dipartimento di Scienze Farmacologiche e Biomolecolari "Rodolfo Paoletti", Università degli Studi di Milano, Milano, Italy.

Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is now widely recognized as a marker of insulin resistance and has been linked to the development and prognosis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) in numerous populations, particularly in the Eastern world. Although there are fewer reports from the Western world, and they are sometimes contradictory, the absence of definitive data on the relationship between a raised TyG index and cardiovascular risk suggested the opportunity of testing this biochemical marker against a well-established vascular marker such as the carotid intima media thickness (c-IMT).

Methods: Primary prevention patients were selected from a cohort of individuals who underwent c-IMT measurement between 1984 and 2018 at the Dyslipidemia Center at the ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda in Milan, Italy.

Introduction: Severe visual deprivation during infancy can lead to long-term changes in ocular development, including significant differences in axial length (AL) between eyes. This case report presents three adult patients with monocular infantile visual deprivation who developed substantial AL interocular differences. The aim is to explore the impact of early visual deprivation on AL and its potential implications for myopia progression.

Cost-effectiveness of radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry for the diagnosis of osteoporosis in the United States.

JBMR Plus

January 2025

Department of Health Services Research, CAPHRI Care and Public Health Research Institute, Maastricht University, Maastricht, 6229 GT, The Netherlands.

Radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry (REMS) is an innovative, non-ionizing diagnostic technique that has shown high accuracy and precision, making it a promising alternative to DXA for osteoporosis diagnosis in clinical settings. With economic considerations playing an increasingly crucial role in healthcare decisions, this study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and economic impact of improved osteoporosis diagnosis using REMS followed by treatment in the United States. A microsimulation-based Markov model was constructed to estimate the cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained (in US$2022) for REMS followed by treatment vs no diagnosis and treatment in US women aged 50 yr and older with osteoporosis.

Rationale: Since the onset of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic in 2019, considerable resources have been devoted to developing vaccines to reduce related deaths and the burden of disease. Various vaccine formulations eventually became available and were approved for clinical use. In this article, we have conducted a review of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) cases induced by different COVID-19 vaccines [Pfizer: BNT162b2, AstraZeneca: ChAdOx1-S, Moderna: mRNA-1273, and Janssen: Ad26.
