Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating X-linked disorder caused by dystrophin gene mutations. Despite recent advances in understanding the disease etiology and applying emerging treatment methodologies, glucocorticoid derivatives remain the only general therapeutic option that can slow disease development. However, the precise molecular mechanism of glucocorticoid action remains unclear, and there is still need for additional remedies to complement the treatment.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multifactorial autoimmune disease characterized with symmetrical progression of joint deformity that is often diagnosed at a chronic condition with other associated pathological conditions such as pericarditis, keratitis, pulmonary granuloma. Despite the understanding of RA pathophysiology in disease progression, current clinical treatment options such as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologics, steroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) provide only palliative therapy while causing adverse side effects such as off-target multi-organ toxicity and risk of infections. Further, available drug delivery strategies to treat RA pathogenicity does not successfully reach the site of action due to various barriers such as phagocytosis and first pass effect in addition to the disease complexity and unknown etiology, thereby leading to the development of irreversible joint dysfunction.

It is true that vitamin D did not earn its title as the "sunshine vitamin" for nothing. In recent years, however, there has been a shift in the perception surrounding vitamin D to a type of hormone that boasts countless bioactivities and health advantages. Historically, vitamin D has been known to take care of skeletal integrity and the calcium-phosphorus balance in the body, but new scientific research displays a much larger spectrum of actions handled by this vitamin.

In farm animals, little is known about the relationship between energy metabolism of immune cells and their activation state. Moreover, there has recently been evidence that dexamethasone, a powerful glucocorticoid-based drug, can exert its anti-inflammatory effects by interfering with the energy metabolism of immune cells, but the mechanisms are not yet fully understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we explored the connection between the energy metabolism of porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and their response to pro- and anti-inflammatory stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and dexamethasone (DEX) .

Gastric ulcer (GU) is a disease characterized by ulcerative lesions on the surface of the stomach mucosa caused mainly by health-related conditions, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use, and Helicobacter pylori infections. The treatment for this disease requires that the drug remains in contact with the site of action, however, the residence time of conventional dosage forms in this organ is limited due to gastric emptying. Curcumin (CUR) is a compound obtained from the rhizomes of the Curcuma longa plant and has been used in traditional Indian medicine for many centuries.
