Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (dipeptidyl-peptide hydrolase, EC 3.4.14.5), an enzyme that participates in the catabolism of bradykinin and Substance P as well as the post-translational processing of various other peptides, has been purified from human and pig kidney. The assay reaction involved the cleavage of p-nitroaniline (pNA) from various dipeptidyl p-nitroanilides. The specific activities of the human and pig enzyme (with Gly-Pro-pNA at pH 7.6) were 49.2 and 45.8, respectively. The dependence of initial reaction velocity on substrate concentration was determined for a variety of dipeptidyl p-nitroanilides over the concentration range 0.05 to 2.0 mM. Most of the substrates tested produced significant non-hyperbolic behavior for the function v vs. S at concentrations above 0.5 mM. As to differences between the two enzymes, the pig enzyme exhibited featureless (i.e., hyperbolic) behavior with Glu-Pro-pNA concentrations as high as 2.0 mM, whereas the human enzyme produced significant non-hyperbolic behavior for the function v vs. S, beginning at S = 0.4 mM. Thus, the human and pig dipeptidyl peptidases IV are kinetically distinct enzyme forms.

Agricultural practices, specifically the use of antibiotics and other biocides, have repercussions on human, animal and plant health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcus, as antibiotic resistant marker bacteria, in various matrices across the agro-ecosystem of an antibiotic-free swine farm in Quebec (Canada), namely pig feed, feces, manure, agricultural soil, water and sediment from a crossing stream, and soil from nearby forests. Samples were collected in fall 2022, spring and fall 2023 and spring 2024.

Due to its anatomical and physiological similarities to the human eye, the porcine eye serves as a robust model for biomedical research and ocular toxicity assessment. An air/liquid corneal culture system using porcine eyes was developed, and ex vivo epithelial wound healing was utilized as a critical parameter for these studies. Fresh pig corneas were processed for organ culture, with or without epithelial wounding.

Background: The complement system is locally activated after joint injuries and leads to the deposition of the terminal complement complex (TCC). Sublytic TCC deposition is associated with phenotypical alterations of human articular chondrocytes (hAC) and enhanced release of inflammatory cytokines. Chronic inflammation is a known driver of chondrosenescence in osteoarthritis (OA).

Understanding factors influencing the spatio-temporal patterns of apex predators is prerequisite for their conservation. We studied space use and diel activity of tigers () in response to prey availability and anthropogenic activities with trail cameras in Nepal during December 2022-March 2023. We used hierarchical occupancy models to evaluate how prey availability (space use of prey species) and anthropogenic activities (number of humans and livestock) contributed to the tigers' space use, while accounting for landscape effects on their detection probability.

Background: Zoonotic transmission of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant clonal complex 398 (LA-MRSA CC398) from industrial pig farms to farm workers and their household members and secondary transmission to elderly and immunocompromised persons has led to a growing number of serious infections and even death.
Objective: We tested the hypothesis that conventional pig farms confer a higher risk for LA-MRSA CC398 carriage among farm workers and their household members than specific pathogen-free (SPF) farms, which follow a set of stringent rules concerning biosecurity, health control and transportation of pigs between herds.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of farm workers and their household members from 25 Danish pig farms positive for LA-MRSA CC398.
