An ELISA was developed using cross-reacting antigens of Litomosoides carinii and Setaria cervi to detect antibodies in filarial patients. The diagnostic potential of the test was investigated in 80 symptomatic cases of filariasis, 40 asymptomatic carriers and 50 normal subjects of an area around Lucknow endemic for Bancroftian filariasis. By the criteria laid down for ELISA positivity for filariasis, 86.2% of the symptomatic cases could be detected by this test. Only four of 40 asymptomatic carriers and one of 50 normal subjects gave a positive ELISA response. Purified antigenic fractions of S. cervi are also promising for detecting asymptomatic carriers.

Basal forebrain global functional connectivity is preserved in asymptomatic presenilin-1 E280A mutation carriers: Results from the Colombia cohort.

J Prev Alzheimers Dis

February 2025

Department of Psychosomatic Medicine, University Medicine Rostock, Rostock, Germany; Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE), Greifswald, Rostock, Germany.

Background: Imaging studies showed early atrophy of the cholinergic basal forebrain in prodromal sporadic Alzheimer's disease and reduced posterior basal forebrain functional connectivity in amyloid positive individuals with subjective cognitive decline. Similar investigations in familial cases of Alzheimer's disease are still lacking.

Objectives: To test whether presenilin-1 E280A mutation carriers have reduced basal forebrain functional connectivity and whether this is linked to amyloid pathology.

Diagnostic yield of cystic fibrosis from a South Australian monocentric cohort: a retrospective study.

BMJ Open

January 2025

Genetics and Molecular Pathology, SA Pathology, North Adelaide, South Australia, Australia

Objectives: To determine the diagnostic yield of cystic fibrosis (CF) using a two-tiered genetic testing approach. Although newborn screening includes CF, this typically only covers a selection of common genetic variants, and with over 2000 reported in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, we hypothesised that patients will be missed and present clinically later in life.

Design: A retrospective study over a 5-year period (January 2018-December 2022).

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, National Clinical Research Centre for Obstetric & Gynecologic Disease, Beijing 100730 China. Electronic address:

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder and traditionally considered more prevalent in Southern China. However, with increased migration and intermarriage, more and more thalassemia carriers had been reported in Northern China. The lack of screening for thalassemia carriers may also result in missed diagnosis in Northern China.

Introduction: Recently, efforts to eliminate malaria have shifted focus from symptomatic cases alone to include asymptomatic carriers, who are now recognized as significant contributors to the disease's transmission and control. This study examines the relationship between asymptomatic malaria infection and hemoglobin levels in Benin.

Methods: A cohort in Benin was enrolled and categorized into three age groups (under 5 years, 5-15 years, and over 15 years) for follow-up from August to November 2021.
